Solar Panels – All You Need To Know

The use of solar panels is an excellent way to reduce your energy bills long term, and represents one of the best investments you can make on your house. A solar panel is an assembly of solar cells, also known as photovoltaic cells, which is used to generate and supply electricity in both commercial and residential applications. Nowadays it is quite common to find homes with solar panels on their roofs. By using the sun as a renewable source of energy, solar panels can be used to generate more than half of your domestic hot water needs. Using the sun as an energy resource is also a great way to become environmentally friendly, as you effectively reduce fuel bills.
So how do solar panels work? Photovoltaic solar electricity, otherwise known as PV, is solar electricity that is generated from the suns energy via solar panels that are installed on the roof of your home. The PV cells use sunlight to create electricity. Basically, the solar panels installed on your roof will give you free electricity for your home!
How is this possible? Each PV solar panel is made from a semi-conducting material, which uses sunlight ...
... to create an electric field. The PV solar cells are made from layers of silicon, which allow the sunlight to knock electrons free from their usual orbits and generate a direct current (DC). An inverter in the solar panel system converts this DC into an alternating current (AC), which is used in the homes’ electricity system. This is how solar panels provide usable electricity to a home.
How much electricity is generated? The strength of a PV cell is measured in kilowatt peak, which refers to the amount of energy the cell generates in direct sunlight. The amount of solar electricity produced will depend on the number of panels you have, and the amount of sunlight that the panels get. The more light intensity, the more electricity you will generate. Solar panels work best on south facing roofs and can even work in overcast conditions.
The electricity produced can be linked to your water tank to produce hot water. Basically, the solar panels are positioned on the roof of your home, which transfers heat from the sun to the water tank. This provides hot water for your home to use whenever you need it.
Solar panels are an excellent long term investment and increase the value of your home.
