Geo, meaning to live has been a vanguard for the media transition that has taken place in Pakistan. In early noughties, interim government of then General Pervaiz Musharraf made a way forward and allowed digital media to pursue new heights. Ironically, same media was the most active member of society against the government of General Musharraf before he intermittently and reluctantly let go of reigns of Pakistani power.

Geo with its creativity and versatility has produced a range of shows from religious and spiritual well being to pop culture entertainment. Geo boast some of the biggest names in Pakistani television. From Good Morning with Nadia khan (that is on a temporary hiatus) to Aaj kaamran khan ke saath it has a variety of different shows in nature that are full entertain value for various demographics.

Some would argue that the biggest cultural impact Geo Tv has had is on Pakistani films. Geo Tv has released some of the most critically acclaimed movies of recent time under its banner. Movies such as Ramchand Pakistani and Khuda ke liye has given fresh breath to much maligned Pakistani film industry.

And hence the self praise advertisement that these Geo people reach everywhere. However, the banning of the certain programmes were criticized by all media channels and intellectuals. However, this is not the first time the news group has been involved into controversy.

Geo Network has also influenced the sports industry of Pakistan. It was the first private network to take interest in domestic t20 and domestic Pentagular cup. Even though, it did not have the same impact as bskyb had on English Premier league but it, nevertheless, provided a platform for hundreds of crickets who have dreamt performing for larger public. Geo is also influential into other sporting abilities. However, instances like the cricket world where the advertisement became more then nuisance.

Geo’s effects on society can be debatable but one thing its influenced on Pakistani media industry cannot be doubted. The standards at which Geo provides entertainment has caused other channels to improve substantially. This, in the essence of competition, is supposedly a good thing. It, however, provides a very useful entertainment for the public even in the news business. Programs such as Capital talk and Meray Mutabik generate handsome amount of TRP because of its bold and blatant contents.

Geo network with all its creativity and innovation has crossed all borders and boundaries. It was influential in increasing cross border cultural entertainment. However it is a thin line between good reporting and desperately seeking TRP. One hopes that it is one such line that Geo never crosses.
