The Galaxy range of phones from Samsung is set to welcome a newcomer in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Xcover. We have seen this range of phones expand at a rapid rate thanks mainly to the success of the original Galaxy S device. So far we have seen models for fitness fans, fans of smaller phones and the forthcoming new 3D version. This new model aims to take on the Motorola Defy as the ultimate rugged phone.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this new models durability is its resistance to water. The new Galaxy Xcover has the ability to withstand 30 seconds underwater at depths of up to one metre. Although this does not mean you are likely to take the phone swimming it will be great news to anybody who has dropped their handset into a bath or a sink. This is thanks to the body of the phone being completely airtight and this feature also helps to protect the model against other problems such as mud, dust and dirt. The Xcover gives users a good quality screen that measures 3.65 inches and uses capacitive technology to ensure that the display responds from the slightest touch. The durability of the model is enhanced by the type of glass that is used in the construction of the screen which is four times tougher than regular glass helping the model to withstand scratches and keep in top condition for longer.

One area where the new Samsung Galaxy Xcover keeps pace with many rival handsets is with regards to the operating system that it uses. Part of the attraction of the Galaxy range is their use of the superb Android platform and the Xcover offers this in its very latest version. Known as Gingerbread this platform gives users a great interface which is perfect for displaying a wealth of information. This interface is known as Touchwiz UI and is famous for its excellent social networking integration. This feature collaborates all of the users updates from various accounts such as Twitter and Facebook and presents them all together in real time. Operation of this handset is fast thanks to an 800Mhz processor which keeps everything ticking along at an impressive pace. The Xcover also impresses when it comes to multi media features with a 3.2 mega pixel camera capable of also capturing video footage. Internal storage on the phone has not been confirmed yet but the phone will offer a micro SD card slot capable of accepting cards up to 32GB in size.

The new Samsung Galaxy Xcover is a welcome addition to the range and certainly covers an area of the market not currently catered for with the firms current line up of models.
