Analog and Digital transcription service – a evaluation
Day by day, the Transcription service is growing into leaps and bounds. Its presence is required by each and every sector – business, education, media, law etc, and all need transcription in one way or the other. All these segments need the transcription service for the audio and video recording of the various business meetings, seminar, interviews, lecture sessions conducted for their further analyses and development.
The audio and video recordings are done in both analog and digital formats.

The analog recording is done by converting the physical recording of sound into wave forms. The recording is done in analogous to the difference in air pressure. A transducer converts the air pressure into electrical signals. The electrical signals are then recorded by a recording device like a record cuter or magnetic tape. The digital recording is done by transforming the physical properties of the sound into a number sequence. This is stored and interpreted back for reproduction. The sound is converted into analog signal by a microphone and digitized by ...
... means of analog to digital converter.

Though the digital transcription service is widely used, some customers may solicit service for analog transcription of their age old historical meetings, important interview etc. They need the transcripts, so that it may serve as an imperative tool to assess their performance. All these old recordings mostly would be in analog formats in the form of gramophone disc, wire recorders, cassette tapes, etc. The instrument used for dictation is the Dictaphones. Later the digital format came in the form of MP3 WAV, CD, and DVD. The digital voice recorders replaced the Dictaphones. There is no time constraint for the digital voice recorder; you can record as long as your wish. The tapes in contrast can hold only 60 or 90 minutes of recordings.

Both Analog Transcription and digital, has its pros and cons. In analog recording, the sound quality gets depreciated over a period of time. So it becomes a tedious task for the transcriber to document the recordings. The accuracy rate for the analog footage transcription is somewhat less. There will be voice distortion, some slippages background noises, overlapping. It takes a great deal of time and effort to convert the voice recording into text. Hence obviously the transcription rates are high for the analog files.

In digital recording the files can be easily transferred and stored in the PC. Moreover it is easy to edit the digital files. If a customer need only a particular portion of his work to be transcribed, the service provider can simply delete the unwanted segment and document only the section requested by the client. Moreover the accuracy rate is high in Digital Transcription. A transcriber will be able to hear voice clearly, and will easily capture the voice and convert it into text. They will record each and every word. Since it is less time consuming, the transcription rates are very less.

The drawbacks for digital files are the presence of errors like quantization noise, aliasing. In contrast the analog file does not have this drawback. Likewise sudden loss of data occurs in the digital files due to virus infection or other unobtrusive reasons. . On the other hand though there will be some distortion for the analog recording, they somehow retain some decipherable sound.
