Magnus Effect is a phenomenon in which a spinning object flying in a fluid creates a whirlpool of fluid around itself, and experiences a perpendicular force to the line of motion. Magnus Effect has been invented by a German physicist and chemist H.G. Magnus in 1853 and the invention was named after him. He said that Magnus Effect is responsible for the bending motion of the tennis ball when served or when a golf ball is driven.
