There is a lot of choice these days for people in the market for a new smartphone. The Apple iPhone franchise remains wildly popular, but seems to be under threat from a new generation of dual-core powered Android devices. A good example of the latter is the Samsung Galaxy S2.

In this article I will compare some of the key features of the iPhone 4 with those of the Galaxy S2 to see which handset comes out of top.

Camera
Both handsets are competent cameraphones and are equipped to take hi resolution still images as well as high definition video footage. The iPhone 4 has a 5 megapixel camera and is capable of capturing 720p footage, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S2 is capable of capturing full 1080p HD with its 8 megapixel unit. Therefore, the Samsung Galaxy S2 beats the iPhone 4 in this department.

Downloadable Apps
Apps are big business and one of the main reasons why so many people are attracted to smartphones. They offer a means to increase the functionality of the device as they allow users to carry out numerous tasks, taking advantage of the hardware on offer. The Apple AppStore is currently ...
... in the lead in terms of the number of apps on offer and the number of users. However the Android Market which provides downloadable apps to the Galaxy S2 and other Android smartphones is steadily catching up. The number of Android users is increasing all the time. In fact at the time of writing, it was recently announced that some 550,000 new Android devices are being activated globally on a daily basis. With figures like these, we can only assume that it is a matter of time before the Android Market overtakes the AppStore. However, both offer similar apps, which are simply designed to operate on different platforms and perform essentially the same functions.

Processor
The iPhone 4 is equipped with an Apple A4 processor which runs at speeds of 1 GHz. This is the same chip that powers the first generation iPad, so it certainly packs a powerful punch, and is a highly capable piece of kit. The Samsung Galaxy S2 though packs a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. This is the latest development in a new generation of smartphone technology. The benefits of this are numerous. For example, users can enjoy faster loading of web pages, apps open and load instantly and the touchscreen responds with virtually zero lag. On paper, the Samsung Galaxy S2 beats the iPhone 4 in the processor department, but the fact that the iPhone 4 has been available for over a year explains this.

In most aspects, the Samsung Galaxy S2 is the superior smartphone. But it has only been available for a few months, whereas the iPhone 4 has been on the shelves for over a year. The iPhone 4 still beats the majority of its competition on paper, and let’s not forget, the iPhone 5 is soon to be announced, and who knows it may give the Samsung Galaxy S2 a run for its money.
