The HTC Desire has proved to be one of the most successful smartphones of 2010. Now, the HTC Desire S looks set to take over the reigns with a number of improvements over the winning formula of the original.

The HTC Desire S offers a 3.7 inch S-LCD capacitive touchscreen with a high resolution of 480x 800, which provides outstanding display quality. Also, the screen can display up to 16 million individual colours, meaning this is a great phone for multimedia use and displaying photos, videos, games and websites.

The HTC Desire S comes with 1.1 GB ROM and 768 MB RAM, as well as a built in micro SD slot. The latter is capable of accommodating a memory card of up to 32 GB. Therefore, you have the potential to store your entire digital music collection on your phone as well as any other files such as videos and applications which have been downloaded from the Android Market. Android Market allows users to browse hundreds of thousands of applications which can be downloaded directly to the handset, much like the Apple AppStore.

Browsing the internet is one of the major reasons people buy smartphones, and the ...
... HTC Desire S is perfectly equipped to carry out this task. Download speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps are available in areas with 3G coverage via an HSDPA connection, with Wi-Fi connectivity on hand to provide an alternative connection whenever you have access to a local wireless network. The browser which is part of the HTC Sense UI package sports some neat features which improve your web browsing experience. These range from multi tabbed browsing to text auto-reflow. The latter automatically resizes and alters the layout of the text on a website when you zoom in. With most other smartphones you have to scroll and zoom to read the text, but not with the HTC Desire S.

The handset is also a highly capable camera phone. With a 5 megapixel unit on hand to take both high quality snapshots and 720p HD video, it is easy to use for beginners or those who simply like to take spontaneous snapshots, but had enough features and settings for users who take their photography a little more seriously.

The operating system of choice is the increasingly popular Android platform, in this case version 2.3 (Gingerbread) which is the latest version. With a 1 GHz processor under the hood, users can expect a responsive touchscreen, fast loading of web pages and generally improved performance. The HTC Sense user interface is also included, and this gives users a highly customisable interface which can accommodate up to 7 homescreens and these can be customised with widgets, apps, themes and colour schemes.

As you can see, the HTC Desire S is a highly functional all rounder, and a great phone for everyday use. Whilst there are more powerful smartphones out there with better processors and camera etc, it is still hard to find anything to dislike about this phone. This looks set to follow in the footsteps of the original HTC Desire thanks to its improved spec list and some great deals available, some of which include the handset itself completely free of charge.
