There was a time when the mechanical weighing scales were used. And the heavy weight would need to be raised to a platform which could require a lot of effort if the object was very heavy. The mechanical scales needed to have a mechanism beneath the platform on which the object had to be placed. This mechanism required some space so the platform could not be very low. And that meant that the object to be weighed had to be lifted to quite some distance vertically to be placed on the scale.

Now the distance for the object to be lifted vertically was minimal and the effort required to do so was much less. This meant that the effort required to take the object off the scale was less as well. And there were other knock on benefits of going digital. The weight reading was no longer needed to be recorded manually and could be directly fed into a management information system. The new technology was more rugged, accurate and reliable which meant maintenance of the floor scales became easier.
