If you are reading this, you probably have come across the theory of unlocking mobile phones. So what do you mean by unlocking a phone?

Unlocking is name given to the practice of changing the settings on your mobile phone so that you can use any SIM card with it. Mobile phone networks around the world often lock the handsets they sell in order to keep you as a customer once your contract with them expires, or once you decide you can find a better deal somewhere else. Locked phones mean customers have less choice.

In most parts of the world, companies often lock mobiles because they tend to come subsidised at point of sale. This means that mobile operators absorb part of the cost of the mobile, so they expect you to stay with them until they make back this cost (and beyond, as many of you have discovered!)

Mobile phones can be unlocked and are perfectly legal if done professionally and ethically. But how would you know if your phone was locked?

A phone is network locked if it doesn’t accept with SIM cards from every mobile company. There’s a variety of error messages you get when inserting an ...
... incompatible SIM such as “incompatible SIM”, “enter network unlock code” or “enter subsidy PIN”.
While there are many reasons why a mobile might not work when you introduce a SIM, here are some strong indicators that suggest a phone is locked: the phone, its box or software are heavily branded with the operator’s name and logo.

So, you’d want to unlock your phone but you’re not sure if your phone CAN be unlocked. So how would you know if your phone is among the ones that can be unlocked? The majority of phones can be unlocked and although there are a few exceptions, there are too many to mention individually. Typical examples include operator-exclusive phone models. A good way to figure out whether your phone can be unlocked is by phoning your operator. In some cases, your operator won’t be able to unlock your mobile, yet a professional high street unlocker will. Pop down the road and talk to your local unlocking shop for a near-definitive answer.

If you’re considering unlocking your phone to avail the best offers from other mobile phone service providers, then do so with professional help so as to keep things legal and working!
