Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, which is called UAV for short, is an unmanned aircraft that is controlled by radio remote control equipment and program-control device. It bears no cockpit on board but an autopilot, the program-control unit and so on. It is tracked, positioned, controlled, telemetered and digital transmitted by radar and other devices by people at the remote station on the ground, in a ship or on the master plane. It takes off like ordinary aircrafts or lifts off with use of booster rockets under the radio control; it also can be tossed from the mother plane in the air. When recycling, it not only lands automatically like a common plane or parachutes under the radio control, but also can be recycled by block. It is designed reusable for aerial reconnaissance, surveillance, communications, antisubmarine and electronic interference, etc.

In a few local wars recently, UAVs played a significant role for not only accuracy, high efficiency and flexibility in reconnaissance, jamming, deception, searching, and firing adjustment, but also multiple combat capabilities under informal conditions. It also led variety of researches on the military academic and equipment technology, etc. It together with the breeding arsenal ships, unmanned tanks, robot soldiers, computer virus weapons, space-based weapons, and laser weapons, etc, will play an important part in warfare of ground, sea, air and space in the twenty first century, and will bring far-reaching influences to the future military struggles.

Some experts predicted that it is the combat that between stealth UAVs and antiaircraft weapons in future air combat. However, as a new branch of the military search field, it’s short of experience of fighting and the technology is not ready yet, UAVs are now restrictedly performing in high altitude electronics and photographic reconnaissance. Therefore, major military powers in the world have accelerated their work on developing UAVs.
