LG have packed an impressive spec list into their flagship Windows Phone 7 smartphone, the LG Optimus 7. The handset showcases the innovative new software, and additional key features include a 5 megapixel camera, super fast internet browsing, and an impressive touchscreen.

LG took a step to differentiate itself from other startup WP7-phones: it has a set of physical keys upfront, instead of the capacitive ones others sport. Another design specialty is its slightly curved shape which is enough for easier handling but does not impede those who are used to the more slab like design.

Being larger than the conventional smartphones with displays of 3.5 inches, the LG Optimus 7 does not feel any more cumbersome. Even its battery compartment is covered by a metal cover: the whole phone – even though it’s not a unibody device, feels like it’s been carved from one chunk of metal. Solid, stable, rigid, clean, streamlined are the adjectives coming to mind when looking at it. On the back, the camera compartment’s design is worth mentioning: it sits some millimeters deeper than the back cover, and though it is nigh ...
... invisible, it is covered by a glass plate, protecting the camera without using a lens cover. This innovative touch means the unit remains sleek and streamlined without affecting the camera’s performance.

As for innards, the LG Optimus 7 performs as we would expect from a top of the line WP7 phone. Fast, smooth scrolling and zooming characterise the browsing or the camera app as well as the gallery. No memory shortages, and using menus is a breeze. If you zoom in, anti-aliasing is there to smooth the edges. It’s as close as you can get to the perfect camera on a mobile phone. As you may expect, the camera also boasts the ability to capture HD video footage in 720p quality. The star of the show is an app called Play To. It lets you send your media to any DLNA-capable devices (in short: Xbox360, Win7 PCs or HDTVs) that acts like a silver screen for your content. All it requires on Win7 PCs is to allow Media Player to be controlled remotely, and that is it.

The turning point of every smartphone, the battery; the LG Optimus 7 houses a 1500 mAh resource, and it lasts well over a day, even with considerable online usage. With restrained usage you can expect almost two full days. Still, it’s better than some rivals with their 1230 mAh batteries.

One of the largest consumers of energy should be the screen: here it is a 3.8” LCD, which is not as extraordinary as the Super AMOLED or the Retina Display, but it does its job far better than average, and here its touchscreen capabilities shine. It does react to slight touches, it is quite sensitive, but not overly so, so you actually have to touch the screen for the effect. Because of this, the user experience seems more authentic and organic.

The LG Optimus 7 is not a phone built to excel at any one task; rather it provides a solid all rounder for those who need a device which can handle any task you throw at it. And it does this with the utmost style and flair thanks to some innovative software and hardware to match.
