HTC and Samsung had two of the bestselling non-iPhone smartphones of 2010, with the HTC Desire being a show stopping success and the Samsung Galaxy S being the biggest selling Android phone of all time. It was always obvious that both companies would follow up their successes with new devices but, while Samsung were keen to show off their Galaxy S2 device, the updated Desire smartphones unveiled by HTC at the 2011 Mobile World Congress did not appear to offer much new.

This is because the Desire S, that many people had speculated to be the Desire 2, was in fact just a slightly tweaked modification and the phones true successor would come in the form of the new HTC Sensation. Previously leaked onto the internet under the name of the HTC Pyramid, the Sensation is likely to become HTC's latest flagship smartphone with its only real contender for this title being the equally fantastic EVO 3D.

Both companies have gone down the route of expanding their phone screens, with the Galaxy S2 and Sensation now featuring very spacious 4.3" displays. HTC has opted for Super LCD as its technology of choice while Samsung is keen ...
... to show off its latest Super AMOLED Plus screen technology which is arguably the best in the business at present. Although the differences may only seem slight on paper Super AMOLED Plus does offer significant improvements over its predecessor Super AMOLED. While Samsung may win in this regard both screens are of exceptionally high quality and are ideal for all forms of visual smartphone entertainment.

Both phones run on Android Gingerbread with all the obvious goodies that that entails, although each company has added its own interface. For Samsung this is the TouchWiz UI while HTC has of course thrown in its trusty Sense UI which many people consider to be the best Android UI around. Both interfaces are really easy to use and at the end of the day this factor may just boil down to personal preference or brand loyalty.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 was originally intended to come with a dual core 1GHz processor but in order to make it more competitive against newer rivals, the HTC Sensation included, this has been bumped up to 1.2GHz. The Sensation also features the same processing power although it has a little less memory to play around with compared to the Galaxy's 1GB, with just 768MB on offer. In this regards the Galaxy S2 probably has a slight upper hand in terms of performance although there is not a huge difference.

As the phones both run on Android they both come with excellent entertainment options for music, video and games, with access to Android Market and excellent connectivity through 3G and Wi-Fi. There are also fantastic 8 megapixel cameras with 1080p video recording support on each device although the Galaxy S2 has a better front facing camera at 2 megapixels compared to the Sensation's VGA camera.

These two handsets are fairly evenly matched and the differences are only slight. At the end of the day any choice between them will probably boil down to personal preference, brand loyalty or the aesthetic appeal of either device. Either way though, these two Androids look set to phenomenal successes in the coming months and worthy successors to their 2010 forebears.
