1. Who Is Maha Periyava?
Maha Periyava was born on 20 May 1894 in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, and was named Swaminathan. The name Maha Periyava means “the great elder” in Tamil, a title of deep affection and respect used by devotees. He is also remembered as the Sage of Kanchi.
His life was devoted to dharma, learning and service. He lived with extraordinary simplicity, owning almost nothing, and his calm presence drew people from every walk of life.
2. Early Life and Ascent to the Peetham
At the young ...
... age of thirteen, in 1907, Swaminathan was ordained as the 68th Acharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham and received the monastic name Chandrasekharendra Saraswati. The Peetham is traditionally associated with Adi Shankara and has guided the Advaita tradition for centuries.
Even as a boy, he devoted himself to the study of the Vedas, scriptures and Sanskrit, and soon became known for his wisdom and discipline.
3. The Padayatra and a Life of Service
Maha Periyava travelled widely on foot, undertaking long padayatras across India. These journeys carried him through countless villages and towns, where he met ordinary people, offered guidance and blessed all who came to him.
He encouraged the preservation of the Vedas, temples, classical arts and traditional learning. Devotees often speak of his gentle manner, his sharp memory and his concern for the poor and the sincere seeker alike.
4. Teachings, Compassion and Devotion
His message was simple and practical. He urged people to follow their duties with honesty, to respect elders and teachers, to care for others and to keep faith in the divine. He spoke of dharma as a way of daily living rather than a distant ideal.
Many devotees share stories of his kindness and his quiet ability to understand their troubles without being told. For them, he was not only a scholar but also a living embodiment of compassion.
5. Deivathin Kural, Legacy and Jayanti
His discourses were gathered into the well-known Tamil work Deivathin Kural, meaning “The Voice of God,” which remains a cherished source of guidance on dharma, culture and spiritual life.
Maha Periyava attained siddhi on 8 January 1994, and his Adhishtanam in Kanchipuram is visited by countless devotees. His Jayanti is observed on the Anusham star in the Tamil month of Vaikasi, when devotees remember him with prayers, chanting and acts of charity.
Conclusion
Maha Periyava showed that greatness lies in humility, learning and selfless service. His life continues to remind devotees that true spirituality is found in compassion, discipline and faith, and his blessings remain a source of strength for generations.
