Introduction

Kurma is the second avatar of Lord Vishnu, who took the form of a giant tortoise to support the world during the churning of the cosmic ocean. Remembered for his patience, stability and quiet strength, Kurma stands as a symbol of steady support in times of great effort. His divine form is available in idol brass and bronze for devotees who wish to honour this ancient avatar.

His story is one of the most celebrated episodes in Hindu tradition. Explore more devotional art at Gold Plating Art Studio.

1. Who Is Kurma and What Does the Form Represent?

Kurma is counted as the second of the Dashavatara, the ten principal avatars of Lord Vishnu. He is shown either as a complete tortoise or in a half-human form, with the upper body of Vishnu and the lower body of a tortoise. He holds the conch and the discus, the divine emblems of Vishnu.

The tortoise is known for drawing its limbs inward and standing firm, which devotees see as a reminder of calm, patience and steadiness.

2. The Curse of Durvasa and the Fall of the Devas

The legend begins with the sage Durvasa, who offered ...
... a garland to Indra. Indra placed it carelessly on his elephant, which trampled it. The angry sage cursed the devas, and they gradually lost their strength and prosperity.

Weakened by the curse and pressed by the asuras, the devas approached Lord Vishnu for help. He advised them to work with the asuras to churn the ocean of milk, the Kshira Sagara, to obtain amrita, the nectar of immortality.

3. The Churning of the Ocean

Mount Mandara became the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki served as the rope. The devas and asuras pulled on either side, but the great mountain began to sink into the ocean.

At that moment, Vishnu took the form of Kurma and lowered himself beneath the mountain, holding it steady on his back. The churning could then continue without interruption.

4. Treasures from the Ocean and the Rise of Amrita

As the churning went on, the ocean released many wonders, including the divine cow Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling tree and Goddess Lakshmi. The deadly poison Halahala also emerged, and Lord Shiva consumed it to protect the world.

Finally, Dhanvantari appeared carrying the pot of amrita. Vishnu then took the enchanting form of Mohini, and the nectar was shared with the devas.

5. Kurma Temples, Kurma Purana and Kurma Jayanti

The Sri Kurmam temple in Andhra Pradesh is one of the few ancient temples dedicated to Kurma and draws pilgrims throughout the year. A Kurma relief depicting the churning of the ocean can also be seen at the famed Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia.

The Kurma Purana, one of the eighteen major Puranas, is named after this avatar. Devotees observe Kurma Jayanti with prayers and fasting, remembering his unwavering support.

Conclusion

Kurma teaches that great achievements need a steady foundation. His story encourages devotees to face challenges with patience and faith, trusting that divine support carries them through the hardest efforts.
