Introduction

Kushmanda Devi is the fourth of the nine forms of Goddess Durga, worshipped on the fourth day of Navaratri as the divine creator of the universe. Her name tells her story. She is the goddess whose gentle smile is believed to have brought the cosmos into being when darkness covered everything. Radiant, powerful and compassionate, she is revered as the giver of health, energy and prosperity.

For devotees and art lovers alike, her form is a beloved image of Shakti, lovingly sculpted in idol bronze for temples, festival shrines and devotional spaces. Explore handcrafted bronze idols of the Divine Mother at Idol Bronze.

1. Who Is Kushmanda Devi and What Does Her Name Mean?

Kushmanda is the fourth of the Navadurga, the nine forms of Durga honoured during Navaratri. Her name joins three Sanskrit words: “ku” meaning little, “ushma” meaning warmth or energy, and “anda” meaning cosmic egg. Together they describe the goddess who created the universe from a spark of divine warmth. Kushmanda is also the Sanskrit name for the pumpkin, a vegetable traditionally linked with her worship. She ...
... is believed to dwell within the orb of the Sun, and her radiance is often compared to its blazing light.

2. Iconography and Symbolism of Kushmanda Devi

Kushmanda Devi is depicted with eight arms, which is why she is also known as Ashtabhuja Devi. In her hands she holds a kamandalu, a bow, an arrow, a lotus, a pot of nectar, a discus and a mace, while the eighth hand carries a japa mala said to grant spiritual powers and treasures. She rides a lion, a symbol of courage and dharma. The lotus stands for purity, the nectar for vitality and long life, and the weapons for protection against negativity. Her serene smile reminds devotees that creation itself begins with joy.

3. Mythology: The Goddess Who Created the Universe with a Smile

According to tradition, there was a time before creation when the cosmos was only silence and darkness, with no light, no sound and no life. In that endless void, the goddess smiled gently. From that smile arose a spark, and from the spark came the cosmic egg, filling the emptiness with light. Sun, stars and worlds are said to have taken shape from this divine energy. In some traditions, the three great goddesses Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati are described as emerging from her form. After creation, she took her place in the Sun, sustaining all life with its warmth.

4. Kushmanda Devi Temples and Navaratri Observance

One of the best known shrines of the goddess is the Kushmanda Devi Temple at Ghatampur near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, regarded by devotees as an ancient and powerful place of worship. The Durga Kund Temple in Varanasi is also traditionally associated with this form of Durga. On the fourth day of Navaratri, devotees fast, recite hymns and offer fruits, flowers and sweets such as malpua, along with dishes made from pumpkin. Many devotees also pray to her for good health and a bright, energetic outlook on life.

5. Mantra, Anahata Chakra and Spiritual Significance

Kushmanda Devi is associated with the Anahata or heart chakra, the centre of love, compassion and balance. Devotees chant the mantra “Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah” seeking relief from illness, sorrow and fatigue, along with strength, long life and clarity of mind. Her worship teaches that true power flows from warmth rather than force, and that the smallest spark of light can overcome the deepest darkness.

Conclusion

Kushmanda Devi is the Divine Mother as the source of light, life and energy. Her story of creation through a smile continues to inspire devotion during the nine nights of Navaratri, offering hope, health and renewal to all who remember her.
