The musicians involved Jon Corona who played sax, Stephen Grindel playing trumpet, Lee Burlingame who is a virtuoso of alto saxophone, Garret Baxter being renowned as the master of bass, Leo the Bae who played the piano, and Jack Radsliff who accompanied with guitar. All of them gave a fabulous concert with diverse compositions that brought together both rhythm and blues, lyrical and dynamic ones, and every single of them was a pleasure for me to listen to. I was indeed lucky to get to the event because it was full of interesting songs, combinations, and styles.
I was on time, may be five minutes before the recital began. There were a lot of people who were interested in listening to the concert as there were very few empty seats when I arrived. The performance of such an outstanding jazz band was really an exciting occasion for me, and I was really all ears to derive the pleasure from the recital.
To begin with, the first song was called (16). It is performed mainly by trumpet and alto sax, and one can hear the bass in the background. The piece of music is a classical bass trumpet jazz with the 8C and 9B pitches. ...
... The sounding is in octave, but the pitch is indeed strong. The duet of trumpet and alto sax harmoniously combines with the high frequency bass rhythm contributing to the entire dynamics of the song. Importantly, neither alto sax nor trumpet dominate over one another offering an opportunity to listen to each one separately in a mixed performance.
The second song is titled (17), and it is a fabulous trio of piano, bass, and trumpet. The solo of Stephen Grindel is just remarkable as the musician is following the rhythm of both the bass and drum layering a good piece of performance. Trumpet solo is immediately succeeded by the gorgeous sounds of sax that is playing in an outstanding tandem with Kelsey Bleck. This composition is specifically mysterious and unpredictable with the diverse rhythms, and strong pitches. Sax performs in sopranissimo and tenor disposing excellent range. Additionally, the piece is effectively combined with drums highlighting the fast pace. One can hear the high sounding of sax that is being supported with the piano, whereas drums are still playing in slow ostinato. Moreover, the drums are not playing in quick beat, but serve as the support for the sax musician who is virtuously introducing his solo. The guitar is not playing because it can mix with the piano which is great as it is a good opportunity to pay more attention to the wonderful performance.
The next composition (20) is quick in pace and beat with the dynamic and intense performance of trumpet solo and vivid escort of bass. While listening to the music piece, I cannot but hear the quick beat of the bass to which the trumpet solo is being skillfully adjusted. The trumpet solo is immediately followed by the sax solo, which is supported by the accentuated drum performance. The range of the sax sounding varies from sopramissimo to tenor. The composition keeps me in constant tension. At the end of it, the piano is stepping into representing rhythmic solo and supported by bass and drums. Indeed, I cannot help dancing with my feet. Finally, I am lucky to listen to the excellent drums solo.
Right after highly rhythmic and dynamic compositions, the next one (21) is a sort of a contrasting musical piece with the slower beat and lower pitches played by bass, drum with the trumpet, and alto sax. The music demonstrated constant tempo being a slow, earthy and funky song which belongs to the blues category. The guitarist seems to be improvising and the drummer appears relaxed and pleased with the solo performance. There is also a bass solo which is also relaxing. Actually, it is evident that there is no a specific pattern in the performance, and each musician can eventually take the lead and play solo. This style is peculiar of the modern jazz performances where the bass player is the basic voice, whereas all other voices and musical instruments can introduce their own solos. Anyway, this composition is pure blues which is the embodiment of the emotion. The musical piece is at the heart of my feelings, as bassist and other musicians are transforming their emotions into notes, tempos and pictures. They have managed to combine the oldest and the newest styles in one song and gain pleasure from the performance. It seems to me that there are some instances of pop where each band member has an opportunity to come forward and introduce new ideas.
The next compositions represent the duet of trumpet and sax accompanied with the piano solo with an excellent, rhythmic bass performance, and fast drum beat. The audience can hear the piano playing in the background and accompanying the melancholic saxophone. At the end of the performance, there is the piano solo. It is rhythmic and the entire scale sounds very intensely. All in all, each solo is dramatic and supported by bass whose music is really breathtaking. I have also noticed that every musician is enjoying the performance, and the solos and the entire composition are a sort of play where each of them has managed to highlight the stronger parts of their pieces.
To crown it all, the entire performance was rather diverse. There were different modes and pictures from Brazil to Blues. The songs included both sad and bright notes which either reached high pitches or got me down to earthly feelings. One way or another, the compositions can be described as having romantic and relaxing rhythms. Although they differed significantly, the recital in general was marvelous because all the members of the jazz band were enthusiastic about the process and supported each other. At the end of the concert, the band gathered and was very pleased to talk to the audience and share their emotions and experiences while playing their songs. There were a lot of the aspects of the performance that each audience member was interested in because every song was different.
To sum up, in the course of the jazz concert, as the musicians played, they were striving to render their emotions and meaning of each composition. Hence, no words were necessary because everything was clear, and each solo manifested a specific idea. The performance went through cultures, religions, emotions, and feelings uniting the entire audience and making them gain pleasure from the entire process. All the musical instruments blended into the music of soul embracing all the styles, genres, and epochs. Drums, saxophone, bass, trumpet, guitar and piano were indeed masterfully presented, and I have got a rich experience and one more joyful evening in my life. Overall, the music band was extremely enthusiastic and passionate about jazz demonstrating deep knowledge and professionalism. It also made me happier since one more evening was not wasted in vain.
