Replacing the drive train in any vehicle is an inherently expensive process. The reason is that the drive train is the most complex and difficult to manufacture system in your vehicle. Not only is the manufacture of an engine difficult, installation is not simple either unless the installer has ample experience. Whether you are in need of a VW Engine or a Toyota Tacoma engine, there are a few things that will help you as you search for a replacement motor. Relax and take notes as we walk you through buying an engine.

I've found over the years that many consumers don't know what they're looking for when they start the engine buying process. You'll need to establish your goals when searching for your replacement motor. How much life do you want out of your product? Is a good warranty worth paying more to you (hint, it should be, to a point)?

If you want your VW engine or your Toyota Tacoma Engine to last, then you're going to want to either get a remanufactured engine, or a low mileage engine.

It is reasonable to expect ...
... to pay more for a great engine than you would pay for an ok engine or a car lot engine. The good news is that you will almost always save money buying used, whether we're talking a VW engine or a Toyota Tacoma engine. The difference is going to be how much. The most commonly sought after VW engine today is the 1.8L Turbo engine. Were you to buy one of these new at the Volkswagen dealership, you would pay around $7,000. You can typically buy a good used replacement for less than $3,000. If you're able to find something with very low miles, as in under 20,000, of course the price can go up.

The question you need to be asking yourself is How do I make sure that I get what I'm paying for? After all, for every Toyota Tacoma Engine offered with true low miles, there are 3 offered with inaccurate miles. That's right, your supplier could lie to you about the number of miles on the product they sell you! You have to protect yourself, and the way you do this is simple.

The first way to protect your VW engine purchase is to get the VIN off the vehicle your engine is coming from, and to then run a vehicle history report. A reputable supplier from a company that is honestly representing their product will provide this without question. What this does for you is show you the mileage on the vehicle your engine is coming from when that vehicle was in a wreck. Make sure your vehicle history report shows a salvage title was issued - this means that the vehicle history report is actually for a salvaged vehicle, and not just a VIN your supplier got off of a vehicle listed on eBay!

The second way you protect your Toyota Tacoma Engine purchase is to check any business you're thinking about dealing with at the Better Business Bureau. Do this by going to BBB.org and putting the website of the company you're thinking about dealing with in the appropriate spot.

About: In the end, there will have to be some level of trust between you and your supplier. The VW engine vehicle history report and BBB report will serve to help anyone who doesn't buy parts on a daily basis. You'll be able to buy with a reasonable measure of confidence, making sure you're both getting what you pay for and dealing with a company that stands behind their warranty.
