Pune, situated on the Deccan Plateau near western coast, was earlier known as 'Punya-Nagiri' or 'Queen of Deccan'. The Britishers called it Poona. Now it has got its original name Pune.
Pune, second largest city in Maharashtra, has a long history. The town got its name some time in the tenth century. But it was during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja that Pune witnessed development in every field.
Pune is known as the 'Oxford of the East' due to the presence of several prestigious educational institutions. Pune is a centre for cultural activities. This has earned the city the title of the cultural capital of Maharashtra.
Pune has several places of interests for tourists. Eighth century Pataleshwar Cave Temple, dedicated to the god of the underworld, is a marvel of rock-cut architecture. Shrimant Dagduseth Halwai Ganpati Temple houses the most favourite deity of the city, the Ganesha. Osho Park is a great centre for meditation and rejuvenation.
Pune boasts of the prestigious Film institute; It has produced several top class actors to Bollywood. Aga Khan Palace, where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned for participating in the ‘Quit India Movement' in 1942, is a major tourist attraction. Among other attractions are Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Shaniwar Wada, Sinhgad Fort, Saras Baug (a park), Sadhu Vaasvani Mission and Katraj Jain Temple.
The distance from Pune to Lonavala is about 64 km. Lonavala is well connected with Pune by rail and road. All the trains going from Pune to Mumbai have a stop at Lonavala. The trains, many of them express, take only little more than an hour for the journey from Pune to Lonavala.
Lonavala is on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. Buses are available on this route at short intervals. The taxi cabs charge about Rs.1500 for the trip from Pune to Lonavala.
Located in the Sahyadri Ranges, Lonavala is spread over an area of about 38 square km. The name of the city is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Lonavali', which meant a ‘group of caves'. There are many caves in and around Lonavala.
One of famous tourist destinations in Lonavala is Tungi Fort. The other forts in the area are Koregad Fort, Lohagad Fort, Tikona Fort and Visapur Fort. Many caves like Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves and the Bedsa Caves are situated in and around the town. Ryewood Park, Sausage Hills, Scorpion's Sting, Tungarli Lake and Valvan Lake are among the other attractions. Tourists can also visit religious places like the Bhairavnath Temple, Shingroba Temple (Khandala) and the Koli Temple.

How To Travel From Bangalore To Kodaikanal By: Rashmiranjan Patil
Located in the state of Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal is one of the most famous hill stations in South India. The hill station with its scenic beauty and pleasant weather attracts lots of tourists every year. Kodaikanal is referred as the Princess of Hill Stations and is visited by tourists all over the year. As it is nearby to Karnataka and Kerala, tourists from these states find Kodaikanal a suitable holiday destination. The blooming of blue Kurinji flowers that happens only one time in twelve years is an additional attraction of this hill town. The hill town is also famous for the educational institutions with international reputations.
Kodaikanal is placed at around 465 km away from Bangalore. To arrive at Kodaikanal from Bangalore, all modes of transportation including road, rail and air are available. Still the ideal mode of transportation to reach Kodaikanal from Bangalore is by road that is about 8 hours of journey. The journey by bus may take an extra 2 hours to reach Kodaikanal as it takes breaks at places for refreshments. Private cabs are available and charge around 12-60 Rupees per kilometer based on the type of car opted by the tourists. Direct bus services are provided from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. There are several buses ranging from Air Bus to AC Sleeper Coaches available to the hill station from Bangalore. The bus ticket rates range from 360-600 Rupees for each passenger. Kodaikanal bus station is located at the heart of the town.
While travelling by flight, a person can get down at Madurai airport which is placed approximately 126 km away from Kodaikanal. It is the closest airport to Kodaikanal besides airports at Trichy and Coimbatore. The travel time to Madurai from Bangalore by flight is one hour though it takes about three hours to reach Kodaikanal by road from Madurai airport.
The two train services that link Bangalore with Kodaikanal are Nagarcoil Express and Tuticorin Express. Trains to Kodaikanal leave from two stations in Bangalore namely Bangalore city Junction and Krishnarajapuram respectively. The train services are available only till the railway station at Kodai road. A two hour journey by bus or taxi is needed to reach Kodaikanal city from this train station. The Nagarcoil Express Train services are available only on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. However there are train services to Kodaikanal from Bangalore offered by the Tuticorin Express train on a daily basis. The travelling time in train is around 9-10 hours and online booking is also facilitated.
