Eye Health

Most people have on occasion experienced some sort of eye problems. Be it dry eyes, tired bloodshot eyes, itchy or irritated eyes, our eyes will generally tell us when they are not getting the care they need. Water and itchy eyes can therefore be a sign of allergies, while dark circles can tell us we are not getting enough sleep.
Some other signs that the eyes give off include yellowness which can indicate jaundice, hepatitis, or gallbladder disease. Droopy eyes can be a sign of a disorder in the muscles of the eyes and bulging or protruding of the eyes may indicate a thyroid problem. A different in the sizes of the pupils can indicate more serious problems as well, for instance a tumour somewhere in the body. Periodic blurring of vision might indicate diabetes.
All of these signs are given off the eyes. So while the eyes have been called the window to the soul, they are also very literally the window to our health. We've all seen it, those clear eyed energetic people who seem to be in perfect health. Much can be discovered by looking into someone's eyes.
Because of the importance of our eyes, there ...
... are also a variety of physicians who specialize in ensuring the health of our eyes. These include: Ophthalmologists who are medical doctors specializing in diagnosing and treating eye disease. They can also do surgery, give eye tests and prescribe corrective lenses. Alongside these specialists we also have Optometrists who while not medical doctors, are licensed to give eye examines and treat nonsurgical problems. They can prescribe lenses and in some places can also prescribe medication. Finally we have opticians. These specialists fill prescriptions for glass and contact lenses. In not all places are they required to be licensed.
If you notice any unusual signs in your eyes it is always best to make an appointment with your health care practitioner who can refer you to the appropriate specialists. Alternatively many people already have an eye care doctor of one speciality or another so making an appointment directly with them if possible is also recommended. However, should you simply wish to give your eyes the nutrients they need then below you find some recommendations for keeping your eyes healthy naturally.
First of all as have all heard vitamin A is the eye vitamin. B vitamins are also fundamental to good vision as are vitamins E and C. The minerals selenium and zinc will also go a long way to improving eye health. A well balanced diet and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables should form the basis for any eye care plan.
Vegetables and fruits that are rich in beta carotene are usually orange in colour. Carrots, yams, and cantaloupes are great ways to boost eye health. Finally, avoid hair dies around the eyebrows or eye liners containing coal tar or any other dangerous and harmful chemicals. Try also to avoid looking directly into the sun and make sure to wear UV protective sun glasses during the summer months for ultimate protection.
