In modern times, there are other methods to celebrate Diwali. Some families do the puja at home, and some opt for the guidance of an experienced priest. There are also arrangements for pujas that can be done online for those who cannot arrange it physically. To ensure that you are more confident in your preparation for Diwali, it is beneficial to understand the importance of the puja, the traditional steps, and how to book it.

What Is Maha Lakshmi Puja?

Maha Lakshmi Puja is a Hindu religious ceremony or ritual to invoke Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity, fortune, and abundance. They believe that the goddess provides blessings and wishes for the people's success and happiness in their professional and personal ...
... lives; that is why the devotees worship her and pray for her blessings.

During Diwali, the puja is usually held in the evening, following auspicious timing and as per the rituals followed by the family. Lord Ganesha is also worshipped, along with the deity Lakshmi, in many households before they start doing anything new to get guidance and to get rid of obstacles.

The details of the ritual may vary from region to region and family to family. The overall goal is the same, however – to pray with faith, devotion, and respect.

Why Is Goddess Maha Lakshmi Worshipped During Diwali?

Devotees who worship Goddess Lakshmi find special religious significance in Diwali. Lamps and diyas create a welcoming ambiance, and homes and business premises are cleaned and decorated before the festival.

It is believed that during Diwali, worshiping Goddess Lakshmi is a prayer for wealth, good fortune, and harmony. Families also take the time to be with each other, share sweets, and start new things with great intentions.

Diwali Lakshmi Puja is a time for people to seek stability and progress for their businesses and homes. The ritual is not only about material wealth, but also peace, contentment, generosity and responsible living go hand in hand.

Important Rituals Performed During Maha Lakshmi Puja

While the way Maha Lakshmi Puja is conducted might differ, the following steps are generally part of the traditional preparations:

1. Clean and Decorate the Puja Area

Families clean their homes and set up a special space for worship before the puja. The entrance door as well as the puja room can be decorated using rangoli, flowers, torans, and diyas.

A tidy and organised space fosters a peaceful worship space.

2. Arrange the Puja Samagri

Items required are a Goddess Lakshmi idol / picture, flowers, kumkum, rice, fruits, sweets, incense sticks, diya, and puja thali. There are a number of rituals that need extra items or offerings.

When a priest conducts the puja, it is better to check the samagri beforehand.

3. Begin With Sankalp

The resolve made prior to the commencement of a religious ritual. The devotee can give his/her name and other details as per the priest's direction.

It helps to set the intention to perform the ritual and the purpose of worship.

4. Offer Prayers to Goddess Lakshmi

The priest or devotee can pray the traditional prayers and mantras and can offer flowers, sweets, and other things that are prescribed. During Diwali puja, Lord Ganesha can also be worshipped.

The particular order will vary according to the family's tradition and the method of puja selected.

5. Perform Aarti

Aarti is commonly performed towards the end of the puja. Members of the family can come together to pray and ask for happiness, peace, and prosperity.

Can Maha Lakshmi Puja Be Arranged Online?

Yes, people can take part in online Lakshmi Puja when they are not able to get a priest for the occasion or attend the temple. This could be an option for those who reside in another city or country and wish to follow their own traditional Diwali celebrations.

Online arrangements give the devotees an opportunity to take a look at the services that are offered, provide necessary details, and understand how the puja is going to be conducted. The exact process and inclusions, however, are dependent on the service chosen.

Prior to booking, confirm the date, ritual information, Sankalp requirements, and if photo/Video updates are available. This will help you to know what you can expect rather than assuming what you may be offered.
