Bad diet, addiction to smoking, poor dental hygiene, neglect for good habits like chewing and rinsing, or simply the factor called age – there are innumerable reasons why our teeth don’t stay all glossy and white the way they were when we were young.

But the solutions are not as umpteen as the problems that cause this discolouring that can ruin even the most radiant smile. The enamel keeps getting thinner and the inner layer dentin is exposed to a variety of afflictions that slowly lead to that not-at-all-white look - a costume that teeth are left to wear with other accessories called plaque and bad breath.

Of course, the market is bustling with empty promises and things that scream from a retailer’s shelves. Thousands of toothpaste brands, over-the-counter teeth whitening products, strips, mouthwash bottles and quacks are constantly wooing people without informing them of the risks that instant, artificial, and chemical laden whitening brings in.

Most results are surrounded with unexpected consequences like toothache, translucent tips, increased sensitivity of teeth and other effects of the harsh ...
... chemicals that such magic products contain.

You can’t continue to use Carbamide peroxide – the most common whitening agent in most bleaches, for instance, and expect your gums to stay free of irritation and your teeth to not turn brittle. Teeth can easily become weak and thin with overuse of whitening agents.

Many studies have also explored outcomes like gum inflammation, genotoxic effects, receding gums and even oral cancer in young adults that the market of whitening agents stays blissfully indifferent to.

That explains why our elders and grandparents still swear by good old tricks like chewing the very anti-septic and powerful neem twig or rubbing charcoal that not only removes stains from teeth and lightens overall tooth colour but also binds to tannins that stain teeth.

There is another such natural trick that is relatively easily available than a neem plant or charcoal powder. It is sitting right there – in your kitchen.

Turmeric – yes, that yellow spice!

Yellow for white? It may sound quite a paradox but it works. Turmeric has curcumin that is packed with antibiotic, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It also consists of a few vitamins that can provide adequate minerals that our teeth need. It has anti-microbial properties and can protect teeth from other problems while keeping them healthy and shining. In fact, some DIY practitioners swear by its ability to fight with plaque and tooth decay as well when whipped with other ingredients. No wonder people in Asia chew this spice in its whole form along with a neem twig to ensure that gum, teeth and the entire mouth stays well-cleansed and taken care of.

Its abilities to address cavity and infections (that tamper with mineral for hard tissue destruction) are also well-pronounced. Turmeric’s powerful benefits for oral health, gum cleansing, and effects against gum infections, gingival inflammation make it a ready and natural answer for dental problems. Also, turmeric powder happens to be conventional teeth whitening remedy in India for a long time.

There are many ways of using its whitening powers. You can mix organic turmeric powder with baking soda and coconut oil to brush teeth for two to three minutes and then spit & rinse properly.

Or one can chew organic turmeric root the traditional way. It has to be done with patience and ease so that the root’s juices are circulated around the whole mouth and envelope all teeth and gums. Then, one can spit and rinse the mouth properly to let go of yellow strains, if any.

There is also the toothbrush way where one can wet the toothbrush and then dip it in organic turmeric powder before brushing the usual way. Here, turmeric has to be allowed to sit for three to four minutes before rinsing the mouth. You can repeat another round of brushing, letting it stay and rinsing.
When done consistently with the organic variety, turmeric can start showing beautiful results on your teeth in a matter of days.

Unless there are conditions like blood clotting fears for post-operative phases, pregnancy, diabetes, gall bladder issues or situations that warrant medical opinion; this is a perfect solution that is extremely natural and devoid of any side effects.

It not only whitens your teeth but also helps in giving your teeth proper cleansing, bacterial protection, and real hygiene that other chemical alternatives can never deliver in the long term.

Colour your brush yellow and see your teeth glow.
