In this painting Mark Humes wants to say that we should understand a person as what he is rather than just assuming about the person without knowing that person fully. We have a different thinking about people which we eventually contrast just by talking them once or twice which is not appreciable for any human being. It is very difficult to understand a human as a whole because the human nature is unpredictable.
