Patanjali Munivar : His Contribution To Yoga And Hindu Philosophy
Introduction
Patanjali Munivar is one of the most revered sages in Indian spiritual tradition, honoured as the author of the Yoga Sutras and the father of classical yoga. Believed to be an incarnation of Adisesha, the divine serpent of Lord Vishnu, he is remembered for bringing order, clarity and discipline to the science of the mind and body. His teachings have travelled across centuries and continents, guiding countless seekers on the path of inner stillness.
Beautifully crafted figures of Patanjali Munivar are available in brass and bronze at Gold Plating Art Studio.
1. Who Is Patanjali Munivar and What Does the Form Represent?
Patanjali Munivar is traditionally portrayed as a sage with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a serpent, with a canopy of hoods above his head. His folded hands in anjali mudra express humility and devotion, while the serpent form reflects his origin as Adisesha. He represents the union of wisdom, discipline and divine grace.
2. The Legend of Patanjali and Adisesha
According to tradition, Adisesha was watching Lord Vishnu enjoy the cosmic dance ...
... of Lord Shiva and felt his weight grow lighter with joy. When Vishnu explained that the dance was the cause, Adisesha longed to witness it himself. Lord Shiva promised that the sage would see the dance at Thillai if he took birth on earth. Adisesha then fell as a tiny serpent into the folded palms of Gonika, a devoted woman who was offering prayers to the Sun, and thus received the name Patanjali.
3. Patanjali and the Thillai Nataraja Temple
Patanjali travelled to Thillai, now known as Chidambaram, where he joined the sage Vyaghrapada, who had the feet of a tiger to climb trees for sacred flowers. Together they performed penance and were blessed with the vision of Lord Nataraja’s Ananda Tandava, the Dance of Bliss. Both sages remain closely linked with the Thillai Nataraja Temple, and their images are found near the sanctum.
4. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and Teachings
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a collection of short verses that set out the discipline of yoga. They describe the eight limbs of yoga, known as Ashtanga, which include ethical conduct, discipline, posture, breath control, withdrawal of the senses, concentration, meditation and absorption. The text defines yoga as the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind, and it continues to guide yoga students and teachers around the world.
5. Patanjali Temples and Sacred Places
Besides Chidambaram, Patanjali is honoured at the Brahmapureeswarar Temple in Tirupattur near Tiruchirappalli, where he is believed to have attained samadhi. Devotees visit this shrine to seek mental clarity, focus and peace. He is also remembered on Guru Purnima, when students of yoga offer gratitude to their teachers and to the sages of the tradition.
Conclusion
Patanjali Munivar stands as a timeless guide for all who seek discipline, wisdom and inner peace. His legend as Adisesha, his bond with Lord Nataraja at Thillai and his Yoga Sutras make him a central figure in India’s spiritual heritage. For those who walk the path of yoga and meditation, his teachings remain as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago.
