Locksmith, by definition, refers to a person who is trained to open a door or car whenever the situation calls for it. Locksmiths are often needed when a person has incidentally lost his keys. A locksmith can come up with a new set of keys to open the locked car or door. Also, if one needs duplicate keys so everyone in the family can separately have keys of their home, a locksmith should be asked to do it. Locksmiths are really of great help to the public, in general. Now that you know what a locksmith exactly does, do you know the history behind a locksmith?

The locksmith industry actually started as an interesting field of defeating and making different kinds of locks. Apparently, lock is used to secure houses, rooms, cars, and storage facilities, among others. Almost all people, if not all, needs keys and locks for whatever purpose they may have.

A key is used in opening a lock—whether be it a car, cabinet or door. But more modern lock facilities do not require keys as some can be opened trough a number combination, biometrics and keycard. These are more high-end ways of unlocking facilities, but keys ...
... are still generally used up to this day.

The industry of locksmith can be traced back as early as 4, 000 years ago. Historical experts claim that Egyptians in their earliest era were already familiar with the old school engineering, which particularly deals with security. The first lock was said to be built at the Emperor's Sargon II' palace that was located in Khorsabad. Also, in the earliest years, there were locks made of wood found in North Carolina.

Some experts also claimed that Greeks were also using locks during the earliest years that were mainly used to fasten wooden bolt for doors. However, this kind of lock only provided them a little security.

Meanwhile, the Romans used locks that were made of metals. They were creatively designed, as well as the keys and keyholes. Some of those found were elaborative enough—some have designs such as flowers and birds, which seem quite interesting.

The purpose of locks never really changed when compared to their purpose today. All locks are intended to protect the security of a person or property. However, it is undeniable that the security locks of today provide more security and the means are more modern. In choosing which you are going to use for your home or other property, you should assess first if it would suit your needs. Consulting a locksmith, who is an expert on keys and locks, can also be of great help. You have an option of choosing between traditional locks or modern high security locks according to your requirements.

Understanding the history of the locksmith industry could help you understand further the importance of locks and keys, as well as the specialization of locksmiths. The next time you have problems with your locks and keys at home, you can phone the nearest locksmith in town. Make sure, however, to contact a locksmith who can professionally do the task for you.
