Get the size and the price right first time. Before asking for a quote, note:

- the job: garage clean-out, bathroom or kitchen reno, garden, whole-house clear-out, soil or concrete
- what's going in, and whether it's heavy (tiles, soil, bricks and concrete hit the weight limit long before the skip is full)
- your suburb and how long you need it
- where it will sit: wholly on your driveway needs no permit; on the road or nature strip, your council needs a permit and the skip company applies
- driveway access: width (some suppliers want 3 m), overhead clearance, slope, gravel, branches and wires

Ask the supplier before delivery:

- what the hire period covers, the weight limit and the charge for going over it
- whether GST and the council permit are included
- for timber boards under the skip if you're worried about pavers or concrete
- for a docket showing the waste went to a lawful place (EPA Victoria says this is your responsibility)

Keep out of the skip: asbestos, chemicals, paint, gas bottles, batteries and e-waste (anything with a plug, battery or cord). ...
