“powered By Technology And Driven By Intelligenceâ€: Volkswagen And Volvo Engines
Volkswagen is a very popular and established automobile company. There are several engine models offered by this brand. Volkswagen D24 engine is one such model. This is a 2.4 litre inline-6 cylinder, 55 kilowatts diesel engine, which was manufactured by Volkswagen. This engine is available in two versions, Volkswagen D24T engine with turbocharger and a turbo intercooled version, Volkswagen D24TIC engine. All variants of Volkswagen displace 2,383 cubic centimetres from a cylinder bore. The valves are opened through a belt driven single overhead camshaft. The power output of this VW engine is 55 kilowatts.
The D24 VW engine was fitted in Volkswagen LT range and Volkswagen commercial vehicles. This was also used in several Volvo cars. This VW engines gained a mixed reaction from its users. Some owners believe that the VW engines are reliable and have a long life while others complained of various common engine problems like overheating, cracked heads and premature wear and tear. Changing of camshaft belt was also recommended which was a pretty complex job. The main reason being, it is difficult to reach engine in ...
... the LT vans since they are under the vehicle and necessity of specialised tools to carry out replacement. These VW engines require regular checking after every 25,000 miles. However, in most cases these machines have been known to cross 2-300,000 miles without any incident if properly treated.
Volvo group has a history of eighty years. This group had its origin in 1927 when the first Volvo car was produced in the factory of Goteborg. The first truck was that was introduced in 1928 was a big success. Since then there was no looking back for Volvo engines. The B21 Volvo engine is a slant straight-4 engine first used in the Volvo 200 series, which was introduced to replace the B20. The B21 and other related engines are often referred to as red block engines because of the red paint applied to the block. The major difference between these models when compared to the B20 is the option to switch to a single overhead cam (SOHC) in place of the older pushrod configuration, and aluminum cross flow cylinder head.
The B21 Volvo engines features 80 mm stroke, and 92 mm bore. While in US, the B21's power output ranged anywhere between 98 hp and 107 hp (73 to 80 kW), based on variations in the compression ratio that was typically supplied with a B or M camshaft. These Volvo engines are tilted approx 15 degrees to left (exhaust side) to make room for the more complicated injection systems. The turbocharger present in the Volvo engine increased power output to 127 hp (91 kW) for the B21FT, and 180hp (134 kW) for the B21ET. The year 981 also witnessed a new model B23 which had a displacement of 2.3 liters (80 mm stroke and 96 mm bore). Apart from the increased bore size, the engine is identical to the B21. At the end of 1994 Volvo improved the engines again by changing the pistons. These Volvo engine models were not made available in US.
About US: Both these engines have been quite popular and successfully catered to the needs of their respective target customers. Purchasing a used VW engine or a Volvo engine is a wise choice as both these companies have been gained huge customer confidence.
