A tyre pressure monitor sensors can assist drivers in keeping track of tyre pressure. However, is it possible to detect a puncture while driving using a TPMS sensor? Yes, in certain circumstances, but punctured tyres can be detected by them only if they are in a particular type of system and the pressure drop is rapid enough

How TPMS Sensors Detect a Puncture

The system is called Direct TPMS and it involves sensors installed in the tyres or attached to the valve stems. These sensors actually detect tyre pressure and send the information to the vehicle's sensor system. In the event of a puncture resulting in a significant loss of pressure, the system may warn with a warning light when the vehicle is moving.

Indirect TPMS is based on wheel speed sensors that are part of the antilock braking system which detect differences in wheel rotation. If tyre pressure is incorrect, they may roll differently from when properly inflated, enabling the system to sense a potential pressure issue. But, in the case of indirect TPMS, the reading has nothing ...
... to do with the actual pressure of the tyre.

Do TPMS Catch a Slow or Sudden Puncture?

If the system is programmed to detect warning pressure loss and respond quickly enough, then it may give a warning if it detects a sudden puncture with rapid pressure loss. If there is a time gap between the puncture and the alarm, this could be due to a slow puncture that occurs when the nail has punctured the tyre or there is a small puncture in the tube that has allowed the pressure to drop over a period of time.

If the TPMS Warning Lights On:

• You can take the following precautions when the TPMS warning light comes on when driving:
• Just slow down gradually do not brake abruptly
• Check tyres with a good pressure gauge when it is safe to do so.
• DO NOT drive on a tyre that is very underinflated, call roadside assistance.
• Get tyre checked and fixed by a mechanic.

Conclusion

During driving, TPMS sensors can assist in identifying if a tyre has lost pressure which will alert the driver and increase road safety. They should NOT replace the normal tyre inspection and pressure checks, however. Knowing the basics of tyre pressure monitoring can assist you in taking immediate action in the event of tyre issues and minimize the chances of further damage.
