India is known as a country of extremes. It’s not uncommon to find luxury villas owned by billionaires standing close to shanties of pavement dwellers. Therefore, it doesn’t come as a surprise to see India come a distant 132nd in the HRD index. The spiraling gap between the haves and have-nots has raised the concerns of economic thinkers not just in India but across the world also. Despite India’s growth into one of the major economies, the gap between the rich and the poor have widened. Here are some of the major reasons why livelihood training program for underprivileged is essential: -

Creation of a sustainable means of livelihood

Most of the urban poor that you are likely to come across in urban areas are unemployed or underemployed and have no stable source of income. As a result, they often fail to meet their end’s meet. By offering people from the poorer sections with vocational training programmes, livelihood training centers in Mumbai and other major cities across India can provide these people with a sustainable source of income. This will ensure that they can meet the basic necessities ...
... to lead a decent, normal life like other citizens of the country.

Generating employment opportunities

Problems such as partial or seasonal employment are quite common in the semi-urban and rural areas of the country. By providing them with a suitable and regular source of income, NGOs, can at least, make sure that they have a suitable means to support themselves throughout the year. The dependence of rural poor, many of whom re landless farmers will be decreased as a result and they will be able to set up small, independent enterprises of their own.

Reduction in malnutrition levels

One of the major consequences of poverty is malnutrition which is one of the highest across south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. To cope up with this challenge, NGOs need to offer skills-based training as a part of their community development programmes through which the target groups can learn about new methods of weaving, handicraft making, weaving etc. and support their families in a better way. As a result, issues like hunger and malnutrition will not crop up in the long run and more and more people from the poorest sections will be able to fulfill the minimal nutritional requirement that is a necessary to lead a normal, healthy life.

Reduction in the gap between the rich and poor

The ever-widening gap between the rich and poor has been the major concern of the government. If the poor have the basic means to take care of their families, then, they can, at least come on par with people from the middle class and improve their social position. The long-standing cycle of poverty that has been the major cause of their misery will cease to exist as a result, and they will be able to ensure a better future for their future generations.
