Nissan, like every other car manufacturer uses a unique method for naming their engines. The Nissan engine designation is broken up into parts. The first few letters represent Nissan engine family, the next digits stand for displacement in decilitres and the remaining letters stand for features of the engine. When Nissan first started this nomenclature, most engines were carbureted, non-turbocharged and usually used a single camshaft. As technology advanced, Nissan engines needed classification for easy differentiation between various versions. The solution was to add letters to the base designation that indicated the difference.

Nissan RB 20 is one such engine model. This is a 2.0 to 3.0 L straight-6-four stroke petrol or gasoline Nissan engine. This comes in two versions SOHC and DOHC and both these have aluminium heads. All RB engines have belt driven cams and cast iron block. Almost all turbo models come with an intercooled turbo which has a re-circulating factory blow off valve. Nissan A 31 is a famous model that was released in Sep 1988 for the first time in Japanese market. This model included several hi-tech ...
... features like HICAS 4-wheel steering, sonar controlled electronic damping, automatic head lights and automatic electric car rear view mirror. The A 31 Cefiro had several features similar to RB series straight-6 engines that included intercooled turbo RB20DET. In the introductory stage it was overlooked just as any other sedan but in later times it became very popular. Stimulated by the relatively cheap price of this car when compared to other models, this car gained huge popularity in various countries.

The development of Pontiac can be traced in the year 1946, when engineers started considering new engine designs for post war cars. Pontiac is a division of General Motors that manufactured its own V8 engines. Pontiac engines were used in the US car market. These V8 engines were in use in 1932 also.

These engines have an overhead valve with wedge combustion chambers and used cast iron cylinder heads and cast iron blocks. The most innovative feature in Pontiac engine was mounting of rocker arms on ball pivots rather than being separated by rocker shaft. This allowed better valve action with less pressure than the conventional shaft. All Pontiac V8 engines except 301, 265 and 303 Ram Air V engines have used 6.625 connecting rods.

Pontiac engine come with ‘gusher' that assists in reverse cooling system. Later these models underwent minor alterations in the year 1960 for improving power steering pump and avoid corrosion issues. Most of the Pontiac engines were painted light blue. The famous 389 version of V8 Pontiac engine was called the trophy or tempest V8 engine. Pontiac engines are in fact one of the few US manufacturers that did not identify its engine names and sizes with air cleaners or valve cover decals.

V8 Pontiac engines were first launched as Strato streak models. However, seeing the growing popularity of this model, within a short span of time the management decided to introduce V8 model in the entire line of Pontiac models.

About US: Both Nissan engine and Pontiac engine have excellent performance and are unique in their own ways. So all you prospective buyers looking to purchase used engines, try out these models.
