Nissan, like every other car manufacturer uses a unique method for naming their engines. The Nissan engine designation is broken up into parts. The first few letters represent Nissan engine family, the next digits stand for displacement in decilitres and the remaining letters stand for features of the engine. Most of the Pontiac engines were painted light blue. The famous 389 version of V8 Pontiac engine was called the trophy or tempest V8 engine. Pontiac engines are in fact one of the few US manufacturers that did not identify its engine names and sizes with air cleaners or valve cover decals.

V8 Pontiac engines were first launched as Strato streak models. However, seeing the growing popularity of this model, within a short span of time the management decided to introduce V8 model in the entire line of Pontiac models.
