Whether it is updating the look of a room, or doing a full blown renovation of a kitchen, the idea of tackling a DIY Project by yourself can seem overwhelming. Most people don't have the confidence in their own skills to try to take on a large project on their own. The reality is that most renovation projects are not all that hard, even if you have minimal experience, as long as you have the right tools and know where to get advice on how to do it.

There are several benefits to taking on a project by yourself, with the biggest one being the savings on labor. In any renovation project, labor is going to be a large portion (if not a majority of the expense). On average, the labor portion of any renovation project is going to be about half the cost. By simply researching the steps and the equipment you will need, you can easily complete a renovation project on your own. In most cases, the proper equipment can even be rented, so that you don't have to buy new tools. Would you like to save $2,000 by installing kitchen cabinets or hardwood flooring by yourself? I think most people would say yes! A word of caution ...
... though. If your project is going to require any significant plumbing or electrical changes, I do not recommend do that portion on your own unless you have some experience with it. One mistake with electrical or plumbing and it could lead to disasterous consequences.

In addition to a cost savings on labor, you can also find a substantial savings in materials. By sourcing the materials yourself, whether it is through shopping online or going through the closeout specials at your local home improvement store, you can often find great deals on the materials that you will need. Unfortunately, when letting your contractor source the building products, they will often add a markup on the cost of each item. When it comes to cabinets, vanities, or even furniture, consider buying ready to assemble or RTA products. By assembling them yourself, you are taking out another labor expense and keeping your hard earned money in your pocket.

In the event that the monetary savings isn't enough to sway your decision about trying to tackle a project on your own, consider the time frame in which you need to have the project completed. Rather than having to work at the pace of your contractor, you can have the project completed as fast or as slow as you want to work. Often with contractors, they may start a project and then switch to a higher paying project in the middle, if a completion date isn't factored into the contract.

So if you are looking to add value to your home, save a little money, or just add a new skill set, consider handling your next renovation project on your own. The added pride you will feel for tackling a project on your own, and the money that you will save in the process, will make it well worth your while.
