Hypnosis is really an intriguing subject. Hypnosis has been around for a very long time, yet it seems that we are just starting to comprehend it's power. In this over view of hypnosis down the years, you may find yourself surprised by some of the applications it has been used for.
It was in the year 1841 that James Braid created the term Hypnosis, prior to that it had been known as Mesmerism. Braid decided to change the name as there was now a new understanding of how hypnosis actually worked. In Mesmerism, practitioners believed in some special knowledge, and that because of this, people became entranced. But, James Braid realised that it was not because of any magical power the Mesmerist held, but instead what the subject did inside their own mind that resulted in the mesmeric trance.
Emile Coue became one of the first people to write a manual on self-hypnosis. His system was a product of Braids work before him. The face of hypnosis was changing as people now explored hypnosis as a type of focus they could attain themselves, rather than one under the power of the hypnotist.
Professor Sigmond Freud began using ...
... hypnosis to aid his method of psychoanalysis coming to the latter part of the 19th century, however he didn't value it's results. It was reported that, after his books went to print stated that he definitely wouldn't have stopped using hypnotherapy, if he could have known the potential of it earlier in his career.
In the 1950's Milton Erickson developed a much different style of hypnotherapy. This type of hypnosis became known as indirect hypnosis, and moved away from the direct authoritarian approach used previously. Psychologist Milton Erickson was famous for his way of hypnotising patients who had been unsuccessful with other therapists.
Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, who became a massive contributor to hypnosis in that period, used a much more authoritative approach than Psychologist Milton Erickson. Dave Elman was famous for the quality of his fast and powerful approaches, often employed by many hypnotists today. He specialised in lecturing dentists and doctors in hypnotic anaesthesia, many of his methods are still used to this day to help with hypnotic childbirth and hypno-analysis.
The author of 'The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' was Ormond McGill, also known as 'The Dean'. McGill was very well known for his excellent therapeutic work. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond died in 2005.
In 2010, a man known to be among the most talented hypnotists of this generation passed away, Gil Boyne. A direct student of Dave Elman, Gill incorporated Dave Elmans insights and created a highly advanced method of therapy. He wrote the works of 'Transforming Therapies' known as 'The Bible' in the field of hypnotheraputic-analysis.
