Vision is critical for the development of your children, their ability to learn and develop new skills. From seeing your face when your child is an infant to reading, playing outside, and participating in classroom activities, good vision can assist a child in exploring the world surrounding him or her. There are several eye problems which can be diagnosed in children of any age, but the earlier these problems are diagnosed, the easier they can be treated.
Due to increased screen time, changes in lifestyle and spending less time outdoors, myopia in children is becoming more and more prevalent. At the same time, infants and premature babies may require specialized eye exams in order to detect certain eye diseases before they start impairing vision in the future.
Knowing why children's eye care is so important can help you understand what steps you need to undertake to ensure good vision of your children.
Why Is Early Eye Examination of Your Children so Critical?
Children might not be aware of or express their vision issues. Contrary to adults, children might think that they have normal vision although ...
... one or both of their eyes are not working correctly. Therefore, some eye disorders might go unnoticed until such disorders start having an impact on learning, coordination, or everyday activities.
Eye exams will detect refractive errors, squint, lazy eye, or other eye disorders at an appropriate time. The importance of an early intervention should be emphasized since the development of the visual system of a child proceeds throughout childhood.
Thus, parents should not wait until their children express complaints regarding blurry vision before scheduling an eye exam. Visiting an eye specialist can provide the necessary information regarding the health status of their eyes and whether the further assessment or treatment is needed.
Newborn Eye Care: Caring for Eyes from Birth
Eye care starts much sooner than many parents think. Babies, especially pre-term babies and those with specific medical risk factors, need special eye exams.
An important condition affecting premature babies is known as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). In this case, blood vessels in the retina develop abnormally. Depending on the degree of the disorder, ROP can lead to serious problems with sight if the condition is not properly diagnosed and treated.
Preterm delivery, low birth weight and various factors during neonatal period can contribute to the development of this disorder. Screening for the retinal disorder will depend on the gestational age of the child, his/her birth weight, and his/her medical history.
Parents need to make sure that their kids receive retinal examinations following the schedule recommended by a paediatrician and an ophthalmologist. Early screenings are important because certain retinal disorders can develop without showing any visible symptoms.
In addition to that, children may require diagnosis of congenital cataracts, infections, eye anomalies or other developmental problems.
Recognizing Common Childhood Eye Problems
As kids are growing up, there are many changes taking place in their eyes. While some of these disorders may be discovered early in infancy, some appear during preschool or school years.
The common eye conditions among children include the following:
Myopia: Also referred to as nearsightedness; objects from far appear unclear whereas those from nearby are clear.
Hyperopia: Farsightedness can make it hard for some children to perform close work due to the intensity.
Astigmatism: This occurs when the cornea or lens has a non-uniform shape causing blurred vision.
Amblyopia: Also referred to as lazy eye, where normal development of the visual system is affected.
Strabismus: It is an eye misalignment condition that may affect the normal vision of an individual.
These eye conditions may not bring any pain. Therefore, regular examinations are necessary in order to detect the condition.
Childhood Myopia: A Growing Problem
The significance of myopia as a childhood eye health problem is increasingly becoming acknowledged. For myopic children, they are able to see nearby objects, but find it hard to see distant objects like school boards, television screens, and road signs.
There are various things that can lead to myopia. Some of them include genetics, excessive close-work tasks, and minimal outdoor time. Digital gadgets use and study trends have also created worries about visual health in children.
Nevertheless, use of screen devices does not account for all instances of the condition as genetic and environmental factors can sometimes work together in the development of the condition and in its progression rate.
The symptoms of myopia include, but are not limited to, squinting, viewing TV up close, holding reading material extremely close to the face, inability to see objects on classroom boards, and experiencing head or eye aches.
In case there are any of these symptoms, an eye examination would help determine if myopia is present or some other vision problems are developing.
Methods for Prevention of Myopia Development and Progression
Even though it might not be possible to completely prevent myopia from developing in every case, parents can help their kids develop habits conducive to good eye health and possibly help prevent the development or progression of myopia.
1. Outdoor activities
Regular engagement in outdoor activities is linked to low incidence of myopia in children. Parents should encourage activities such as walking, cycling, and playing outside. Two hours per day of outdoor activity is one commonly used guideline for this purpose.
2. Manage recreational screen time
Establish sensible limits on recreational screen usage and have children take breaks when engaged in extended periods of close work. Breaks are effective; however, they cannot ensure that myopia will be avoided.
3. Establish a comfortable reading distance
Books, tablets, and smartphones should not be held too close to the face by children. Proper reading distance, enough light, and correct sitting position are important to make long periods of reading more comfortable.
4. Achieve balance between study and recreation
Studying is an essential part of a child’s life; however, it is necessary for them to have time for exercising, playing, and looking at distant objects.
5. Regular eye examination
Regular eye check-up will help identify any changes in refraction or any possible problems with vision. Children with existing myopia might need more frequent visits, depending on their age and rate of progression.
How Is Childhood Myopia Controlled?
In cases where myopia develops in children, the first step is to conduct a proper assessment of the refractive error and general health of the eyes. Based on this, the ophthalmologist may prescribe spectacles and other appropriate treatment measures.
In case of progression of myopia, special methods for its management can be adopted. These include the use of myopia control lenses, some contact lenses, and eye drops with atropine in small doses.
However, the method will vary depending on the age of the patient, the nature of the prescription, general health of the eyes, and family history. These treatments may help prevent progression, but they cannot ensure total stopping of myopia.
Parents should not introduce the treatments on their own, without consultation of the eye doctor. Follow-up visits help check if the chosen treatment is working effectively.
When Should Parents Consult a Paediatric Eye Specialist?
If the child has persistent blurred vision, constant squinting, abnormal head positioning, eye misalignment, headaches due to vision work or inability to participate in classroom activities.
A specialist opinion is also necessary if there is a family history of eye problems in children or if there is a need for specialized screening among babies.
If your child experiences sudden loss of vision, new whitening of the pupil, serious eye injury, or sudden eye squinting, then a consultation from a doctor is required immediately and not on the scheduled date.
Promoting Your Child’s Vision with Professional Eye Care
Ensuring that your child's sight is protected includes being knowledgeable, prevention, and seeking professional advice. From specialized retinal screening in case of premature babies to monitoring refractive status in school-going children, proper eye care may play a significant role in ensuring good visual outcomes for a child.
Seeking the service of a pediatric ophthalmologist in Dadar, Mumbai, should entail seeking the assistance of a specialist who will be able to assess childhood eye problems, discuss the treatment choices, and recommend follow-up.
