Water ponds are truly one of the important features which add to the elegance of a garden. This portion of your garden needs to be created with special attention and detailed knowledge to avoid several problems which can occur later on. One of the important element that is vital for safeguarding your water pond is the pond liner. A pond liner is basically a resistant membrane which helps in the retention of water. Pond liners can be very useful in protecting your water pond and can add to the beauty of the pond. Through this article we will try and discuss certain important factors which needs to be considered while constructing a water pond and will learn the role of a pond liner in the maintenance of the pond.

The first important thing to keep in mind is the size of the pond hole. It is advisable to make the hole slightly bigger than the actual size of the pond. You should always avoid steep sides otherwise there is a risk of the pond liner sliding down. Make sure that you put a thin layer of sand before placing the actual pond liner. This will be helpful in protecting the pond liner as the thin layer of sand will ...
... prevent the sharp stones from piercing the liner. Build the ledge around the water pond approximately 75mm under the level of the water.

A strong water pond is shaped by plastering the pond liner with a coating of mortar. You should know the correct proportion in which the cement, river sand, building sand and water should be mixed. Make sure that while creating the liner do not stop in between and finish the job at one go. A time gap can cause cracking in the pond. Mortar and natural rocks have different rates of expansion at different temperatures. At one point of time cracks will start to appear. With the coating of the mortar on the pond liner it is also important to put a think lining of mortar on the rim. You can also apply some silicon sealer which will help in keeping the rocks glued into a perfect position.

Another important thing to be considered while building a water pond is the size of the pond pump which will help in the filtration of the water. It is advisable to choose a pump one size bigger than the actual size since it is always easier to cut down the flow if you think its too much, however, increasing the flow is not possible if the flow of the water is too slow. You can put a nylon stocking on the suction of the pump which will prevent the dust to enter inside the pump hence will increase the life of the pump. Make sure that you replace the stocking after every two weeks or so. Also, to give your pond a natural look you can cover the pond liner with pebbles and stones of different sizes. To keep your pond healthy, it is important to replace some portion of the water every week. This will avoid the water going stagnant and will also prevent your water pond turning into a man made bog.
