Royal Challengers Bengaluru have traditionally been associated with superstar cricketers. However, the franchise's modern success has also demonstrated the importance of building leadership around players who understand the team's current environment. Rajat Patidar has become an important part of that transition.

Patidar's importance is not limited to the captaincy role. He is also a middle-order batter capable of changing the momentum of an innings. In T20 cricket, middle-order players often have to adapt rapidly depending on the score, wickets and match situation. This makes his position especially valuable.

As captain, Patidar has to combine his individual responsibilities with the demands of leading an IPL side. He cannot focus only on his own batting. He must also consider bowling changes, field placements, match-ups and the strengths of different members of the squad.

One of the biggest advantages for Patidar is the presence of experienced players around him. RCB's squad includes senior cricketers who have played international and high-level franchise cricket. Their experience can help reduce some ...
... of the pressure associated with captaincy.

Virat Kohli's continued presence is particularly important. Kohli has spent years playing for RCB and understands the atmosphere surrounding the franchise better than almost anyone. His experience gives Patidar another source of support during difficult match situations.

Patidar's leadership became even more valuable after RCB won their maiden IPL trophy in 2025. A championship can completely change the expectations surrounding a team. Before the title, RCB were often discussed in terms of their history of reaching finals without winning the trophy. After the title, the conversation shifted towards defending success.

That creates a different type of pressure for the captain. Supporters now expect RCB to compete for trophies rather than simply qualify for the playoffs. Patidar therefore has to manage both expectations and performance.

His leadership also represents a potential long-term strategy for the franchise. Instead of depending indefinitely on established stars for captaincy, RCB can develop a player who understands its culture while still having significant years ahead in his career.

The biggest test for Patidar will be maintaining consistency. A successful captain needs to respond to defeats without panic and avoid becoming overly confident after victories. T20 cricket provides very little time for recovery, so tactical decisions can have an immediate impact.

Patidar's development should therefore be viewed as a broader story than simply identifying the RCB captain. It is a story about how a franchise can build its next generation of leadership.

If he continues to grow as both a batter and a decision-maker, Patidar could become one of the most important leadership figures in RCB's modern history. His journey has already produced a championship, but his longer legacy will depend on what comes next.
