Alternator Electrical Parts

How do you know if you need to replace the alternator? Hopefully, if you have an indicator light on the dash and not a gauge, once in a while you make sure it lights before the vehicle is started. That way you know if it comes on you should get to a service station. If you have a gauge, if it consistently reads less than 12 volts you should have the system checked.
Bench testing at a store that offers the service it is not always the best way to test an alternator. Some need a signal from the ECM to power up so they may show you it has no output, but it may not have really been bad. Many times they will recommend recharging the battery and a heads up that you may need one if it does not hold a charge when it was actually a weak battery in the first place! The only true way to check an alternator on todays vehicles is when it is properly connected in the vehicle. In some vehicles, if the indicator bulb itself is bad, the alternator will not operate, so always check the owners manual or repair manual before replacing an alternator.
If you have tested the alternator and ...
... it needs replacing, discount parts outlets. has a large selection at extremely low prices. Remember, you will have to lay out the core charge, which is basically a deposit until you return the old one from your vehicle. This is sometimes more than the part itself, depending on the manufacturers need for that core back and the overall demand.
Replacing an alternator is a fairly simple process that only requires a good socket set or a nice set of wrenches. Before starting this job, be sure to have any lock codes for your radio and reset procedures for your alarm. Disconnect the positive battery cable at the battery. Unplug the connector at the back of the alternator. Remove the serpentine belt. This is usually done by using a ratchet handle to relieve pressure at the belt tensioner. If there is not a belt routing diagram, take a picture of the belt before you remove it. Remove the bolts or nuts holding the alternator in and its out! On some water cooled models you need to drain some coolant and disconnect the coolant connection. This is what keeps the battery charged and allows the electrical and electronic components to function properly.
