What a fascinating topic. Hypnosis has been around for hundreds of years, yet it appears that we are only just beginning to comprehend it's ability. The following is a brief snapshot of hypnosis down the years, and you may be a little surprised with some of its uses.
It was in the year 1841 that James Braid coined the name Hypnosis, but prior to that it was known as Mesmerism. Braid decided to update the name for good reason as there was now a better understanding of how hypnosis actually worked. In Mesmerism, practitioners believed there was some unique power, and that because of this, people became entranced. But, Braid realised that it wasn't down to any special power the Mesmerist possessed, but rather the reaction of the subject to the suggestions that developed the mesmeric state.
Emile Coue became inspired to create a book on self-hypnosis. The framework for his system was based on Braids discoveries before him. The concept of hypnosis being a self-induced frame of mind, in place of one reliant on the hypnotist was now starting to become more popular. The difference this made was people could now benefit from ...
... this power to improve themselves.
The psychologist Sigmond Freud who was highly respected for his work in psychology, at first had little belief in the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in his earlier career. This really hurt the use of hypnosis back at the time. His thoughts on hypnosis became more open as he was exposed to applications of it, sadly this happened later in his life, after the print of his books. For some time following this, the art of hypnosis was utilised by stage hypnotists.
In the 1950's Milton Erickson pioneered a new style of hypnosis. Therapists called his method indirect hypnosis, it was very different to the methods used by previous hypnotists. Enabling patients who previously couldn't be hypnotised became known as a trademark of Doctor Milton Ericksons.
A very different style of hypnotherapy was being taught to doctors and dentists during the same time period by Dave Elman. Dave Elman taught a very traditional method of hypnosis which gets great results with pain control and hypno-analysis. The rapid techniques he pioneered are still favoured by therapists today.
Ormond McGill, often known as 'The Dean of Hypnosis', he wrote "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis and became known for his therapeutic work, in which he excelled. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond McGill died in 2005.
Gil Boyne 2014-2010, a pioneer of Transforming Therapy, which expands on the previous findings of Dr Erickson and Elman, and is at the centre of analytical therapy in schools today. A huge believer in the techniques used by Milton Erickson and Dave Elman, Gil developed a totally unique method of therapy. A lot of his students would insist that Gil Boyne was the godfather of effective hypnotherapy techniques.
The world today has so many valuable innovators in the hypnosis field, Gerry Kein and Steven Brooks for example. The use of the internet has spawned a welcome growth in communication among hypnotists. Because of this there has been progression into the application of pain control for serious conditions such as arthritis and I.B.S. on top of the traditional uses, like smoking and weight loss.
