Acne: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
Among all the skin problems affecting people throughout time and across cultures, acne is probably one of the most common. Contrary to popular belief, acne affects not only teenagers but large numbers of adults commonly suffer as well. Among the many causes of acne are clogged pores which results from the use of cosmetics; the adverse effects of air pollution; frequently dietary factors play a role; and especially in teenagers hormonal changes are often the culprit.
Although acne is rarely considered to be a serious medical issue, because of its effects on the outward appearance and the resulting social embarassment and discomfort, many people become increasingly discouraged, coming to believe that effective acne treatments simply don't exist.
The reality is quite different. In fact, there are several safe and effective acne treatment options available. Surprisingly, one of the most effective is simply washing the face at least twice a day! This has proven time and again to be the best natural treatment for acne.
The best times to do so is first thing in the morning upon wakening and the last ...
... thing at night, just before getting into bed. Also, it's important to note that rather than using a harsh cleanser, it may be advisable to use a mild soap that moisturizes and is gentle on the skin. Harsh soaps can actually aggravate acne conditions. The reason for this is that harsher soaps can lead to loss of moisture in the skin, resulting in chafing, irritation and inflammation of skin tissue - each of which can result in acne flare-ups.
For those whose acne does not respond to natural treatments, it may be advisable to use a retail acne treatment product. Many safe and over-the-counter products are available. As with all preparations, it is important for the consumer to carefully read and follow all acne treatment product instructions. Never use any acne product-whether it be ointments creams or pads-in the eyes or internally.
Of course with prescription medications one must follow all instructions very carefully. Failure to do so may result in serious medical consequences. In extreme cases of acne one may choose to consult a dermatologist. For those rare cases in which a dermatologist is consulted, he or she may prescribe medications and have the patient return for follow-up visits such that the doctor may monitor the patient's condition as treatment procedes. However in most cases a simple natural or over-the-counter acne treatment product will suffice.
In all cases one must avoid aggravating the condition by doing things such as picking at or squeezing a blemish. The result of doing so may result in a bacterial infection. The reason for this is that there are a number of germs living under the fingernails even though the hands may appear clean to the naked eye. Microscopic organisms flourish on the hands and under the nails and may act as a vehicle for delivering acne-triggering microbes to facial skin.
Once one has found the best acne treatment it is important to continue using the product until desired results are achieved. The time frame for success will of course vary by individual. Many people have experienced satisfactory results with the use of over-the-counter retail acne treatment products.
