Things That Physician Assistants Do Everyday
Physician assistants (PAs) are the great helpers to reduce the workload of doctors. Although they are not doctors, but their duties need highly specialized training as well. PAs are not allowed to practice medicine unless they are under the supervision of physicians or surgeons. They are trained to provide therapeutic, diagnostic, and preventive health care services.
The supervising physician and state law will determine what a PA will do. However, PAs are the main care providers in inner city clinics or rural places where the physician will only available for one or two days in a week. If there is any problem, the PA will consult the supervising physician via phone calls. Also, the duties of physician assistants should not be mixed up with medical assistants. The latter post will only perform administrative and clinical clerical tasks while PAs are allowed to treat patients and diagnoses.
PAs are usually delegated with the duties such as taking medical history, examining patients, interpreting and diagnosing laboratory tests and x-rays. They are also helping to treat minor injuries such as splinting and suturing. ...
... Moreover, PAs are the people who record progress of patients, counsel patients and consider whether therapy is required. PAs are allowed to prescribe some medicines in most states in US and the District of Columbia. In some settings, PAs are assigned to order medical supplies or equipment and become the supervisors of technicians and assistants as well.
The working environment for PAs is usually comfortable. But the working schedule of PAs will be depending on the supervising physician and settings. If you are working in a hospital, you will need to standby whenever required and your weekends, holidays, midnight, and early morning might be taken to be on call for duty. While the PAs in clinics usually working 40-hour per week.
