As we all know that, Venkatagiri Handlooms have their origin in Venkatagiri, India. But we all don’t know that there are some interesting facts behind this town such as,
The original name of Venkatagiri town is ‘Kali Mili’. There are two major reasons for the name Kali Mili, one is as it is the name of their goddess Kalivelamma and the other is as it is the ruler’s surname Kali Mili Gobburu Jaggaraju. Later, Velugoti Royal renamed it with Vaishnava name “Venkatagiri”.
And they have a richest history in the ancient 17th century. With The patronage of Velugoti Dynasty of Nellore, these sarees ...
... are woven only for the women of royal families on special demands.
Without any training, they have acquired the skill hereditarily from their ancestors.
Another interesting point is, the weavers of Venkatagiri were awarded by the Government of India for bringing this unique technique to India.
The main reason for their soft and smoothness is skill because; the weaving and designing styles of Venkatagiri Handlooms are unique and distinguish.
The weavers mainly produce the sarees of fabrics Silk, Cotton and Cotton-Silk mix by weaving and dyeing.
In dyeing, firstly he washes the yarn, applies desired colours and then turns the yarn to mix the colour to yarn. By this, a unique and durable fabric will be produced; again it is washed and dried. After that, the yarn will be starched and turned in a wheel. By turning yarn into the wheel, weaver produces thread which is used for wept.
Finally the yarn is loaded into the looms in warp, called Pacham. It will take around a week to weave one pacham of four sarees.
In weaving, they use pit looms, the looms which consist of pits and are fixed in the ground level. By sitting on the floor, he places looms peddle and weaves using hands and legs.
The motifs such as flowers, golden works, stones, zari, booti, birds, animals and etc are designed intricately by the weavers.
Venkatagiri Cotton Sarees with zari works are suitable as corporate wears during summers. Venkatagiri Pattu Sarees with designer and embroidery works are apt for bridal and wedding ceremonies. Venkatagiri Silk sarees with floral works are suitable as casual, classical and party wears.
As per the daily changes in fashion, the weavers are producing different eye-popping varieties such as Venkatagiri 100, Venkatagiri Pattu, Venkatagiri Silk and Venkatagiri Cottons.
