Silver Jewellery For Diwali: What To Wear With Every Festive Outfit
Most of us plan the Diwali outfit weeks ahead. The jewellery gets decided five minutes before we leave, standing at the mirror with everything spread across the bed. Dhanteras is on 6 November and Diwali is on 8 November, so that mirror moment is coming up fast.
Silver makes it easier than you'd think, because it goes quietly with almost everything. Here is how we'd pair it with the outfits people actually wear.
Start with the loudest thing in your outfit
Look at what you're wearing and find the loudest part. It could be a heavy border, a bright dupatta or a lot of embroidery. Whatever it is, your jewellery should be the quieter one. Silver is good at this job. It has a soft shine that sits next to colour without fighting it, which helps on a festival day when the clothes are already doing plenty.
A simple test: if your eye doesn't know where to land in the mirror, take one piece off.
Silk sarees
A silk saree with a wide zari border is already shining, so keep the silver small. A pair of jhumkas or drop earrings and a thin bracelet is enough. Silver looks especially good against ...
... deep colours like bottle green, maroon and navy, where it stands out without trying hard. If you like anklets, a plain silver one under a saree is a classic, and you'll hear it every time you walk.
Kurta sets
This is what most people wear for the Diwali puja and the family dinner, so it's worth getting right. Check the neckline first. With a high or round neck, skip the necklace and put your effort into earrings and a few rings. With a V neck, a thin chain with a small pendant fits in nicely.
Pastel kurtas in mint, peach or powder blue look fresh with silver. A marigold or orange kurta works too, because silver cools the colour down a little and stops it from feeling heavy.
Lehengas
A lehenga already has a lot going on, so pick one thing to show off. Usually that's the earrings. A bigger pair of silver earrings with one or two simple rings is plenty. Three necklaces over a heavily worked blouse usually look crowded, and nobody can see any of them properly.
Indo-western outfits
Co-ord sets, jackets over dresses, dhoti pants with a crop top. This is where you can have some fun. Two thin chains at different lengths, a stack of slim rings and a small hoop all work well together. Keep each piece simple and let the mix do the work.
What about gold?
Plenty of people worry about mixing metals, but it's fine. If your outfit has gold work, either keep the silver to one or two pieces or wear only silver. What doesn't work is wearing a little bit of everything you own.
Things to check before you buy silver
Buying silver around Dhanteras is a tradition in many homes, and it's also when a lot of people shop in a hurry. A few quick checks help.
Look for a 925 stamp on the piece, usually near the clasp or inside the band. It means the piece is 92.5% pure silver, which is the standard for jewellery. If you can't see a stamp in the photos, ask the seller to confirm the purity before you pay.
Silver also darkens a little over time because of air and sweat. That's normal, and a soft cloth brings the shine back. Keep your pieces in a dry pouch between wears, and put them on after your perfume, not before.
Silver for gifting
Silver is a good choice for Bhai Dooj on 11 November. A simple chain or bracelet for a brother, or a pair of earrings for a sister, is easy to get right. It's also a nice thing to give friends and colleagues when a box of sweets feels too ordinary.
If you want a place to start looking, Oliven makes 925 sterling silver jewellery in Madurai and delivers across India. Orders arrive packed and ready to gift, which saves time when you're buying for several people. Order early, because the last few days before Diwali are busy for sellers and couriers alike.

Keep it simple
Choose the outfit first. Then add the one piece you'd feel odd leaving the house without. If something still feels missing, add one more, and then stop.
