Many factors make up the game of basketball but the mo important one is shooting. Shooting is actually a variety of skills, not just one, since you have to make shots from various angles in various situations. The best players understand the importance of being able to shoot effectively wherever they find themselves on the court. To help you improve your shooting skills, use the following tips.

One of the most basic things that you have to know about shooting the basketball is when you should take the shot and when to wait. New or self centered players will generally try to take every shot there is whenever the ball is given to them. Many times, this is the wrong course of action to take. Remember that you are there to help the team and not just make a lot of baskets. But on the other hand, there are players that are not confident enough to take the shots that that they should. It requires experience to realize when these shots should be made. However, always be mindful of your environment while you are learning these new things. Take the shot if you have the right angle to do it. But, if you can get the ball in a better ...
... position by passing it along, that should be your choice. Even though basketball is an intense and very physical game, you can often improve your shooting abilities by relaxing and handling the ball more softly. Quite naturally, you want possession of the ball so that you are holding it tight enough so that no one can rip it from your hands. However, when shooting, many players make the mistake of holding on too tightly and applying more force than necessary. You can see evidence of this when the ball bounces hard off the rim. Try to give the ball spin and follow through with your fingertips. This is so that your shot will go where it should go and not in some arbitrary location that you did not want.

An important part of shooting are jump shots, so you should work on improving your vertical jump, as well. You will notice you have greater control and better aim if you keep your elbow in and under the ball as much as possible. The further away the basket is, the higher you will need to jump. But make sure that you're not focusing on jumping so much that you lose control of your hand and the ball.

The shot should be done in one fluid motion. You should release the ball when you reach the peak of your jump. Improving and perfecting your jumping and jump shots will take time and practice.

Shooting basketballs takes a combination of raw talent, lots of practice, and concentration. Everyone has different natural abilities, but you are the one who determines how much of your potential you live up to.

Develop your strengths, but also work on any weaknesses, whether it's layups or free throws that are challenging for you. When you keep the above tips in mind, over time you will see improvement in your game and your shooting skills.
