Baseball Net Part-ii
A quality baseball announcer like Steve Stone can be enough of a baseball net to get baseball purists to tune in on television and watch the game for that reason alone. Some baseball managers have complained that Stone casts too wide of a critical baseball net in regards to some of their players and the critiquing of their play on a daily basis. During Steve Stone's second stint with the Cubs organization and WGN even some of the players on the Cubs roster like Moises Alou complained that Stone cast too wide of a baseball net in his criticism of himself and his teammates. Dusty Baker also did not like the baseball net that Steve Stone used in saying that he coddled too many of his players during his time as manager of the Chicago Cubs.
All of this criticism of the baseball net that Stone cast led him to resign as an analyst for WGN and the Cubs. Because Stone resigned, his broadcasting partner and Cubs play by play man Chip Caray also resigned from the position to go work with his father in the Atlanta Braves organization. It is a reasonable question to ask whether too much of a baseball net has been cast in these situations ...
... and baseball players themselves are way too focused about what is said in a broadcast booth as opposed to what is actually happening down on the field.
Dusty Baker hopefully grew to have a better understanding of the kind of baseball net that analysts have to cast sometimes as a matter of doing their job through the critique of the play on the field as he later would go on to do some work for ESPN. The criticism of managers, players in regards to their decision making and performance is something that will never go away as long as there are still people watching the games.
