Meetup.com is the best. They have various groups for everything you can think of in your area. You check your interests, put in your zip code, or your city and bam! Pages full of groups that you might like to join in your area appear. What can you do? Just about anything you want and even start your own group. If you have to pay fees for a group it won't be expensive, the highest I've seen was five dollars. Ultimately, most groups don't have them and you can leave a group without any complications if you choose to.

I have joined three groups and they have events going on all the time. What I love is the freedom you have in meeting people. You can meet persons in groups which is safer because there are plenty of witnesses in case something crazy goes down, or you can select someone from your group and hang out with them alone.
