Buick Celebrates 40 Years Of Buick Regal
The Buick Regal celebrated its fortieth anniversary this year; and as it was back in 1973, the Regal name still represents a luxurious mid-size sports car, even all these years later.
The Buick Regal was first introduced to the buying public in 1972 as the new 1973 model called the Century Regal. General Motors first introduced their personal luxury cars in a line called the Century Line. The Regal represented the upmarket model of this line and was designed to be both luxurious and sporty. The 1973 Regal sold 91,557 units that year and surpassed an all times sales record that had been in place for almost twenty years, dating back to 1955.
The 1973 Regal came with a standard V-8 350 cubic inch engine, and became an innovator right out of the gates with its powertrain. The Regal was one of the first vehicles in the 1970's to make huge change during the Arab oil embargo by changing their standard V-8 motor to a more gas friendly V-6.
Greg Wallace, General Motors Heritage Center manager, said the Buick team was always an industry leader and an innovator and when the times called for energy conservation, the ...
... team reacted promptly by introducing more fuel efficient motors to the Regal. Wallace said that back then, a team of engineers worked day and night to come up with a V-6 program that would be fully functional in a fraction of the time this type of production normally would take. During this time the team always maintained the Buick brand's reputation for dependability and reliability. Just a few years later in 1978, the Buick line would once again be in the forefront of the fuel economy conservation efforts. The new 1978 Regal was introduced with a turbocharge system that would offer the drivers improved fuel economy. This technology is what propelled the Regal as being one of the most significant and powerful cars of the 1980's.
As the Regal enters its fifth generation, the Buick brand continues to carry on the traditions of the past four decades by offering consumers a dynamic driving experience, as a leader in powertrain and overall driver experience. The new Buick Regal models offer drivers the most powerful engines to date. The Regal line is now equipped with a 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder that produces 259 horsepower with 295 foot pounds of torque. The all wheel driving system ensures drivers will be able to drive safely in all weather conditions. The driving system has incorporated an electronic slip differential and HiPer Struts for improved driving. In addition to the 2.0 engine, Buick offers an upgrade to the 2.4 liter engine that comes with eAssist light electrification technologies. The 2.4 engines offer the consumer an EPA ratings 25 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway.
With a focus on technology and safety, the Regal of today comes with eight-inch color screens with a touch display featuring Intellilink connectivity. Leather seats come with heat controls on the driver and passenger seats. Dual zone climate control also comes standard with the latest Regal line. Buick continues to take the road less traveled and stay an innovator in this industry by offering the driver many unique upgrades in the Regal. They range from Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Lane Change Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert and new radar/camera based safety features.
Buick will continue to stay an innovator well into the next generation. The Regal line will always offer buyers a sleek sculpted design with luxurious interiors that are one of the most responsive vehicles on the roadway.
