Everyone has a shirt that they absolutely love, but that is just a little bit too big and this is usually the case with vintage clothing. You love the shirt stashed away at the back of the shop but its a few sizes too big, but don't walk away, grab it and wear it oversized! Wearing oversized shirts and t-shirts became popular in the 80's and were worn over leggings. Flashdance is an iconic 80's movie and soundtrack and the film inspired the oversized look and made it a hit. The oversized t-shirt or jumper was worn over a tank top and was a great casual look. This combo could also be modified for a night out by wearing a t-shirt with cut outs with patterned or shiny leggings. Button up shirts also became the thing to wear with leggings and the shirts were sometimes worn coming down to the knees! Big jewellery and a belt around the waist would complete this fabulous 80's look. We can still see this look everywhere today and you can gain extra style points if you find yourself an original vintage 80's t shirt. Some shirts today are made purposely to be worn oversized ...
... but are still fitted in all the right places for a smarter take on this style. Buying mens t-shirts and then adding a vintage belt around the waist ensures that the shirt is long enough to be worn over something as mens t-shirts and shirts are made longer. Oversized shirts can also be worn over skinny jeans or vintage cut off shorts. Wear a button up shirt with some high waisted skinny jeans and make sure the cuffs and collar of the shirt are tight and buttoned to add some smartness to the outfit. Off the shoulder t-shirts look great with high waisted denim shorts for a simple summer look. The 90's continued the trend of wearing oversized shirts and both the grunge and hip hop movement also adopted the look. Flannel shirts, t-shirts, American football shirts and baseball tops were all worn oversized and they were worn with even baggier trousers. Gone were the days of tight leggings, everything in the 90's was oversized. Christopher Kane and Stella McCartney showed off oversized coats and jackets this year which are a massive trend and layered with oversized shirts, tight jeans and luxe scarfs this is a look which will take you stylishly through winter.
