Mechanical Engineering – An Overview
Engineering is a very large field of study and includes within it many sub disciplines of the subject. One such sub-discipline is that of mechanical engineering, the broadest and most popular branch of engineering. Mechanical engineering is essentially the application of physics and material science to the designing and functioning of mechanical systems. In other words, mechanical engineering is the life behind all kinds of machines. In fact, mechanical engineering developed as a separate science following the Industrial Revolution in Europe in the 1700s!
If you are looking for jobs in mechanical engineering, you are bound to be eternally spoilt for choice. This is only obvious, since this discipline has the widest variety of specialization options within it. In this sense, jobs for mechanical engineering could be related to mechanics, electrics, kinetics, thermodynamics, and structural analysis, among others. These areas are understood, simulated and developed with the help of modern and computer aided technologies to make machines and gadgets for daily use.

This skill set comprises a background in science with a focus on physics, engineering and mathematics. But these are just educational qualifications. A candidate interested in this sort of a role would be in a great position if he or she had an undying capacity to question things around, along with a creative, innovative mind. Both these traits are important to a mechanical engineer since he or she needs to ask questions in order to be able to find solutions to these. And the way to find solutions is through a mind that thinks out of the box! This apart, mechanical engineers should have logical, analytical and problem solving abilities, along with being able to communicate well. But the most important trait of all is a trait that one can only be born with – i.e. passion for mechanics.
At this juncture it is important to clarify, that while popular culture largely brands mechanical engineering as a job that is easily attainable with a degree in physics, this is not necessarily the case. A thorough understanding and near perfect score in the science is a must, definitely. But an equal importance is given to creative thinking and ability.
