Despite the countless DIY guides on the internet today, you just can't do everything by yourself. There are some problems that will require the skilled hands of professionals - professionals who have trained for years to perfect their crafts.

The problem is, finding such professionals can actually be as difficult as fixing the problems by yourself.
Sure, a lot of general contractors are listed on the Yellow Pages. A number of them even advertise their services on local dailies. And a few even maintain their own websites which you can easily access on the internet.

These general contractors are easy to contact.

But how can you be sure that you're actually getting in touch with a trustworthy contractor? Alas, that my friend, is the question!

Before hiring a plumber, a carpenter, a painter, a roofer, a mechanic, a remodeler, an electrician or a general utilities man, observe the following steps:

1. Ask questions. Not only will your questions provide enlightenment on the needs you want to be fulfilled, the contractor's answers will also allow you to scrutinize how much he knows about ...
... the task at hand. You won't want to hire an inept worker. You will want a contractor you can entrust with your house. And only by asking relevant questions will you discover if he has what it takes to meet your expectations.

2. Conduct your due diligence. Log online and check out the Better Business Bureau to see if there's a complaint filed against him. Look for his listing under your state's board of contractors to determine if he's legit and if he has a history of worthy service. Look for referrals that will testify to the good work he is capable of providing.

3. Protect your rights by preparing a written agreement the contractor has to sign. This written agreement should bind the contractor to indemnify your for damages that may be caused by his ineptitude, negligence or carelessness. If he is the professional that he claims he is, he will not take this personally. Rather, he will take it as a challenge to prove your fears as baseless.

4. Consult with an established listing of reputable, reliable and established general contractors. There are such lists on the internet, such as http://www.fixsor.com . Lists like this will save you a lot of time.

It may sound melodramatic, but it's true - when you hire a contractor, you won't only hire him to repair your house, you will also hire him to repair a part of your life and a part of your dream.

Hence, it is critical that you find a contractor you can truly trust!
