When choosing a skateboard, most people focus on the size, length, traction, and overall design. While these are all important factors, other details are often overlooked, such as the skateboard wheels. Skateboard wheels don't just keep your board rolling — they are also responsible for keeping you on your feet as you tackle different terrains.

Skateboard wheels are attached as a pair at the bottom of a skateboard, held and mounted in place by specialized axles known as trucks. Most skateboard wheels are made of polyurethane, a type of hard rubber. They come in different sizes (diameter) and hardness levels (durometer), and choosing the right wheel can greatly improve your performance

The first one is the diameter. The diameter basically refers to the height of the skateboard wheels. The average diameter of most skateboards range from 52 mm to 60 mm. When it comes to selecting the right diameter, take your own height and built into consideration. Children, teenagers as well as shorter and slimmer skaters will fare well with 55 mm maximum. Taller and heavier skaters will skate best with wheels ranging from ...
... 56 mm to 60 mm

Besides size, skateboard wheels also differ in hardness, as measured by a durometer A scale. The softest ones are at about 75a, while the hardest skateboard wheels are at 99a. The average durometer that most skaters need is 99a. If you're a beginner then you should go with softer wheels so you can easily skate without tripping over rocks.

There are currently four kinds of skateboard wheels available. These are:
Street Skateboard Wheels

These are the smallest type of skateboard wheels, which measure anywhere from 48 to 55 millimeters. These are hard, so you can increase your speed. They are good for performing skateboarding tricks like flips and other aerial stunts.
Vert Skateboard Wheels

These are designed specifically for vert skating or skating that involves landing and jumping on ramps. These skateboard wheels have sizes that range from 55 to 65 millimeters, allowing skaters go fast and go on long distances.
Slalom Skateboard Wheels

These are used mainly for slalom racing and skating, where the skater does all sorts of stunts in an obstacle-type races. Size ranges between 60 to 75 millimeters, allowing racers to skate through long distances at fast speeds.
Longboard Skateboard Wheels

Made especially for longboards, which are boards used for transport, longboard wheels have a size of up to 100 millimeters, allowing for a smooth ride.

Remember, be sure to pick the right size according to how you're going to use the wheel. Also, be sure to pick the type that matches your skill level.
