Anyone who has ever taken even an hour-long drive with children in the backseat knows this: bring along something for them to do if you want to save your sanity and make the trip enjoyable. If you're going to confine yourself to a small space with your kids for many hours, or even days, there will be crying, fighting, spilled food and the question, "Are we there yet?" will be asked at least every 10 minutes. With this also comes an opportunity to spend quality time with your family, and road trips can be a wonderful and memorable vacation.

To make the most of your trip and have fun with your kids on the open road, here are some ideas to keep them entertained, from jokes for kids to the license plate game.

1. Create a Portable Art Kit
Take an empty DVD case and add some paper on the side with the clips, plus a pouch filled with colored pencils. The hard case makes a great writing surface and older kids can be entertained for awhile drawing.

2. License Plate Game
Play the license plate game by printing off checklists for everywhere that include pictures of every license plate in the United States. ...
... Whoever crosses off all the license plates first wins!

3. Book of Jokes for Kids
Kids 5 to 12 will enjoy a book of jokes for kids, which are parent-approved, clean jokes that will have your kids giggling themselves silly in the backseat. Take turns telling jokes, or buy a book of jokes for kids to let your children keep each other occupied for awhile.

4. Travel Scavenger Hunt
Make your own travel scavenger hunt lists for preschool kids and school age children with lists of common things they'll see on the road, such as cows, an empty field, a gas sign or a VW bug.

5. Make an Activity Book
Get an empty 3-ring binder and fill it with clear plastic page protectors. Fill the sleeves with some blank papers and a bunch of games like hangman, tic-tac-toe, word search, hidden pictures and connect-the-dot games to keep kids amused for hours! Give them a dry erase marker and a few paper towels. Some games you can draw yourself, like tic-tac-toe, while others you can print off.

6. Make Road Trip Behavior Clips
Use simple clothespins and decorate them with paint, pom-poms and your child's names before you leave for the trip. Every clip starts off clipped to your visor, and they remain there as long as the kids behave in the back seat. When a child misbehaves, their clip is removed from the visor. Only the kids with a clip still on the visor get a treat at the next pit stop!

7. Travel Treat Boxes
Make your kids easy travel treat boxes with plastic storage containers from a crafts store, like the sort used to organize beads or small craft items. Fill the containers with easy to eat finger foods like vanilla wafer cookies, raisins, goldfish crackers and gummies. As an added bonus, it also helps to contain the mess!

8. Books on Tape
Nothing makes the miles go by faster than a great story. Once kids reach the age of 3, they can begin to follow more complex story lines and enjoy books on tape from your local library. You can get them a CD player with their own headphones, or pop in the CD so the whole family can listen to a good story.

7. Questionnaire for the Adults
Here's a little bonus to keep the adults entertained when the kids are busy. Print off a road trip questionnaire of questions you can ask each other during your drive to get to know each other even better than before.
