An Overview Of Power Sanders

Every type of power sander performs a specific function. The consideration of a variety of features including belt size, body configuration, ease of belt changing, motor horsepower (HP) and table tilting mechanism will ensure appropriate product selection.
Most people associate power sanders with woodworking; however, each type of power sander performs a specific woodworking function. For example, a belt sander is used for coarse shaping whereas an orbit sander is used for paint stripping. It is important to familiarize oneself with the specific function of a particular tool prior to use.
As previously mentioned, a belt sander is used for coarse shaping. Belt sanders range in size from one inch to 37" and can be equipped with grit ranging from fine to coarse. Belt sander features to consider include dust collection capability, ease of belt changing, belt tracking ability, handle grip location relative to the speed control switch, machine balancing, motor horsepower (HP), motor output decibels (dB), platen type and table tilting mechanism. The motor output dB specifies noise level while the type of platen influences ...
... the flatness of the sanding surface.
Random orbit sanders are useful for stripping paint off of furniture. Common applications for random orbit sanders include cleaning between finish coats, preparing new molding and smoothing composite material. The movement of a random orbit sander facilitates a swirl-free finish, as the disc spins in circular pattern while the pad moves in an oval loop pattern. Consider body configuration, motor size and pad size when selecting a random orbit sander.
Although relatively costly, top-of-the-line spindle sanders prove invaluable when sanding asymmetrically shaped pieces. Spindle sanders sand surface swathes approximately 16” wide or 32" wide sections in two passes. Use drum sanders to flatten, polish and smooth surfaces or palm sanders for the final finish sanding on woodworking projects.
Belt width defines the size of the belt sander. Smaller sanders may use 3” by 21” wide belt sanding belts. Such sanders are quite maneuverable, permitting operators to easily access tight work spaces. Additionally, due to their light weight, smaller sanders can be used single-handedly on ceilings and walls.
The use of protective gear and procedures are essential to operating any sander. Make sure the power switch is turned off before you plug in the device. Use a face mask or protective glasses to prevent dust particles from coming into contact with eyes and empty the dust bag after use.
Regular care and maintenance of your sander increases longevity. Regardless of the type of sander, frequently adjust sanding belt tension to keep the belt in optimal operating condition. Inspect sanding belts or discs often. Replace worn or mismatched parts to prevent damage.
Contact a reputable supplier for all of your sanding needs. Reputable suppliers carry sanding belts, sanding discs, sandpaper and sanding machinery. Sandpaper is available in custom configured, precut, and standard sizes.
